Coming Up for Air | George Orwell

Mehso-so

A satirical novel about George Bowling, an insurance man who returns to his childhood village only to find it has been completely taken over by industry and overcrowding. This is set in 1938 England and there is a threat of war overhanging the book. Covers the themes of middle class inertia and despair as well as the strangeness of fierce nationalism. I only found this to be ok—not particularly memorable for me.

Mehso-so

This was an odd read. I was on the verge of panning it as it rambled on and on and on and on without ever seeming to go anywhere. But there was a little story in amongst the rambling and it did make me laugh out loud a couple of times as well as showing it was of its time with some dated opinions, but then right at the end it stopped! Without finishing the story, very clever!!

Starting on this one for a book club, genuinely not sure what to expect as I'm only really aware of Orwell for Animal Farm and *whispers* I've never read that! Haven't been a book club member since I ran two years ago at my old library, so am excited to be a member, talk about books and drink some wine!! 📚🍷📚🍷📚

readinginthedark I haven't read this one! Curious to see what you think! 7y
Laru79 I think it'll be fun to go in as a non-Orwell-er! Will let you know 7y

"The idea really came to me the day I got my new false teeth." The opening line in Orwells 'Coming up for Air' one of his lesser known books but one of my favourites ❤️?
