Hymns of the Republic is quite the journey. Set in the final year of the Civil War, S.C. Gwyne provides fascinating biographies of both famous and not so famous figures.

It's a popular account of the last year of the American Civil War, from spring 1864 to spring 1865. Most of the content will be familiar to anyone who has read a few books about the war -- though the story about Confederate spies conspiring with an exiled Yankee pacifist in Canada was new to me -- but the structure does offer fresh perspective and the writing is terrific: engaging, insightful, and sometimes gently snarky.
