Things Ain't What They Used to Be
Things Ain't What They Used to Be | Philip Glenister
4 posts | 1 read
Were the 70s and 80s all they were cracked up to be? Or have we never had it so good? Philip Glenister - one of our best-loved actors - takes a swig of Babycham, jumps on his space hopper, and heads off down memory lane to find out. Which Bond was better - Roger Moore or Daniel Craig? Was life better when we were served lashings of gravy, instead of a 'drizzle of jus'? And - most important of all - have Curly Wurlys really got smaller, or have we all just got bigger? Philip Glenister's Things Ain't What They Used to Be is a hilarious and affectionate look at the good, the bad and the ugly from three very different decades, that will have you laughing (and cringing) with recognition. If you're going on a nostalgia trip, you couldn't ask for a better guide.

Mehso-so

Lightly amusing. This book would have benefited from photos, and perhaps from discussing fewer topics but at greater length. Some of the chapters felt superficial.

« little phone-number books that popped up when you pressed a letter of the alphabet »

My grandparents had two of those! We used to play with them as kids. We were huge nerds and played « office » or occasionally « spy agency » and those were useful props ?

rubyslippersreads My parents had one of those; it fascinated me as a kid. 4y
KVanRead Oooh that takes me back! Those were super fun. 4y
rabbitprincess @rubyslippersreads @KVanRead I don‘t think my grandparents used theirs, because the pages were blank. We definitely filled them in with fake names and phone numbers 😂 I did wonder how practical they were though because they didn‘t seem easy to refill. 4y

"Yesterday / All my troubles seemed so far away..."
This was the first book to pop into my head when I thought of that first line.
#HeyJune

I had a lot of fun with this challenge! ?

Anton I'm rewatching series 3 of Ashes To Ashes as we speak! 6y
rabbitprincess @Anton I haven't seen Ashes to Ashes yet! I loved Life on Mars though. 6y
Anton As much as I love Life On Mars, I like Ashes To Ashes a bit more. I definitely recommend it, it's less a sequel and more one story told over 5 seasons. 6y
rabbitprincess @Anton It sounds great! Will definitely have to check it out. 6y

Wasn't expecting to stumble across this at one of my local used bookstores! Now I need to rewatch Life on Mars 😉
