3 posts | 7 read
A posthumous double volume of the influential author's first and last written works, published to coincide with the 90th anniversary of his birth, includes the bitter satire "Basic training" and the unfinished final novel "If God were alive today". In the foreword, Nannette Vonnegut, shares her reminiscences about her father and the autobiographical events in his life relate to these two works.

Mehso-so

His first and last works in one book with an intro by daughter Nanette. The first, Basic Training, was fun irony with a great plot and characters. The 2nd, If God were Alive Today, was a wash for me. I know it‘s supposed to be dark satire but it read like back-alley esoterica

Bailedbailed

I‘m so sad to say I bailed on this. Kurt is one of my long time loves. His novels have been a constant in my life for over a decade. This is one of the only books I haven‘t read so I snagged it last time I was at the library. I couldn‘t even force myself through the first short story. I can honestly say I get why it was never published. I‘ll keep coming back to Vonnegut time after time, but I don‘t ever see myself reaching for this again.
