Nothing like waking up at 4 am to finish a book because you can‘t bear to work another day without knowing the ending. 😭 and then subsequently crying all morning. I haven‘t cried this much since The Book Thief.

Ew. Ew. Ew. 1/2 ⭐️

It‘s like she‘s trying to teach a lesson about “boys being boys.” But she only uses her last breath to say “don‘t do that.” The whole book follows jerk characters doing jerk things. Described as a slow burn but it was more like someone rubbed my eyes with IcyHot.

This one is a slooooooooowwww read. The payoff wasn‘t there to finish it. It may be a good story, but I‘ll never know. 1/3 in and all I know is no one knows anything and Axl looks like somebody that somebody used to know. The author doesn‘t drop enough breadcrumbs to make this interesting enough to follow.
(I will say the art for the book on google makes it seem a lot more interesting than what I read...)

Autism ACCEPTANCE is hella important to me 24/7/365/eternity. With two boys on the spectrum, I feel like I spend so much time explaining (read: defending) behaviors and quirks to the world. While we might seem ‘lucky‘ that they‘re both high-functioning, that just makes their disability that much more hidden. Autism isn‘t always obvious. You never know what‘s going on in a family, so please just be kind and compassionate. 💙💙

mdm139 I also have a high functioning boy on the spectrum. The struggle is real. I am so tired of having to fight for services and “collect more data” to prove he needs help. There is four years worth of data from the school! That isn‘t enough! I totally understand what you are going through. You are doing great mom! Keep it up! 14mo
CBee @j.rye we‘ve talked so much about our boys but what‘s even cooler is that we like a lot of the same books! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 13mo

I‘ll be real, it was a painful read. I enjoyed the story, but the language was so overwhelming. You could drown in the ocean of adjectives used in this book. I liked the back door look at Shakespeare. I love Agnes. I appreciated Hamnet and Judith‘s relationship. I‘m just not sure I‘d pick up another Maggie O‘Farrell novel.

AmyG I loved this book. Go figure what works for some and not others. 1y

I am usually not a soapbox kind of person. But everyone should read this book. Whether you have a child with special needs or not, you will laugh and cry, and hopefully understand. Sometimes having a child with a hidden disability makes me feel so alone... and judged... and crazy. But this book actually makes me feel normal for once. If I could buy a million copies and hand them out on the street, I would.

Shut Up About Your Perfect Kid!

mandarchy I just added it to my TBR list. My son has a hidden disability that is basically unmentionable. I constantly hear that he's spoiled and lazy. If people new the underlying reason, they'd maybe treat him better. But I want to protect his privacy. So I often ask people if they would treat him better if they could see it in his face, why do they need proof that he deserves better? It's hard. 1y
j.rye @mandarchy it‘s pretty similar here. Ducky is obviously adorable and looks ‘normal.‘ But he had ASD and unique challenges. I hate explaining it to people because why the f should I have to? Just stop staring, Karen! 1y
mandarchy Sometimes I laugh and sometimes I cry. My son growls at people when he thinks they are out of line. He says there is a monster inside him (his obsession is Godzilla). I work hard to #endthestigma but it's tough. I just hope my son grows confident in who he is so he can withstand the states as he gets older. 1y
j.rye @mandarchy I wish I could growl at people who were out of line too 🤷🏻‍♀️ he‘s just brave enough to do what we all want to do. 1y

So. I went into this book without reading the book-blurb or any reviews. I grabbed it based on its cover really. I don‘t know what I was expecting, but it wasn‘t this. Once I got into it, I finished it pretty quickly. The unnamed girlfriend, Jake, the brother I‘m still not sure exists 😳 it‘s a crazy, but good read. I think I‘m going to have to read it again to get all the details I missed.

NataliePatalie I definitely missed some details but I don't know if I have it in me to read it again 😂 1y
