This was a re-read that I started in February. It took me a while because certain scenes are hard to read (definitely trigger warning territory) and I was putting it off. I'd give it four stars out of five with one star docked for the trigger warning material. Overall I enjoyed most of Talia's journey. I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

An excellent end to probably the best trilogy to start with, if you want to get into Valdemar/Mercedes lackey. Technically this trilogy has spoilers for the Magic's Pawn trilogy, but I think this one has a better balance of tragedy and success, and this book in particular makes you feel you've earned the ending, and sets up several future quartets quite competently. For as short as the books all are, this one does a lot of good work!

“What is it,” Talia asked the ceiling above her head, “What is it about would-be tyrants that makes them speak and posture like third-rate gleeman in a badly-written play?”
(This is basically Sam of Wilds rolling his eyes at villain monologuing, is it not?)

Are there books/series you remember more the feel of, than the details of? I remembered several high points and also several dark moments in this series as well as in the valdemar universe as a whole, but I‘d forgotten one death in particular and was surprised by it as much as I likely was my first time through this trilogy. 💔

emtobiasz Yes! I reread this trilogy last year realized I‘m not sure I ever read book 3 as a teen, because it felt utterly unfamiliar 6y
CoffeeK8 This trilogy for sure. Also the Tortall book series and the Anne Mccaffery Dragon Singer trilogy. 6y
jjmcgaffey Yes, but not this trilogy - I've read it so many times I remember all the events before they come up. But not the words, or all of the feelings - it's a great reread even when i know what will happen. 6y

So proud. 😆 But seriously, books are objects she is so drawn to and surprisingly never puts into her mouth. Even while teething. It'll be hilarious when she rebels by hating books.

Aninski So cute 😍 My son has finally stopped chewing on his books, but he still won‘t let me read to him! He just wants to turn the pages back and forth. I guess that‘s better than nothing, but I‘m impatiently waiting for the day when he‘ll beg me for a bedtime story and I‘ll see him fall asleep peacefully just as I finish reading the last page... you know, like in a movie 🙄 😂 7y
needleminding @Aninski If L can reach the book I'm trying to read to her, she is also 100% only interested in turning pages. One day... one day. 😁 7y

Another great book, and a good finish to this series. I like that the characters remain interesting and continue to grow while having adventures and I love that even though rape, torture, and betrayal are part of the story, the characters still try to be good people.

iread2much Sorry for not posting as much. Pokemon go has vastly reduced my reading time 8y
bookishkai I love this series! I haven't reread them in a while; maybe it's time. 8y
QuoteQueen @iread2much same thing happening here with Pokemon go! Lol. 8y

iread2much @bookishkris I am really enjoying rereading this series. Do you read any of her other series? @VeteransWife512 crazy how addicting it is right? 8y
bookishkai @iread2much I like most of the Valdemar books, but not her other stuff. 8y
QuoteQueen @iread2much I am okay for it being so addicting, it's helping me get some exercise! I can't just "work out" cause it sooooo boring, but Pokemon Go keeps my brain entertained too so it's a win. I've walked over 12mi in the last week! ? 8y
iread2much @bookishkris I really hate how she's been padding her new valdemar books with sports. I'm glad I'm rereading the old stuff, it reminds me why I liked her writing 8y
