Rock Jaw: Master of the Eastern Border
Rock Jaw: Master of the Eastern Border | Jeff Smith
3 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
Trying to return a rat creature cub to the mountains, Fone & Smiley Bone encounter yet another adversary: the sly and mighty mountain lion, Rock Jaw. In this fifth volume of the BONE saga, Fone and Smiley Bone strike out into the wilderness to return a lost rat creature cub to the mountains. It doesn't take long before they run smack into Rock Jaw, "Master of the Eastern Border," an enormous mountain lion with a none-too-friendly disposition. Life gets even more complicated when they befriend a group of baby animals who are being orphaned by rat creature attacks. Everything comes to a head in an earth-shattering clash between Rock Jaw and Kingdok, the leader of the rat creatures.

Thought of you @vivastory I'm currently reading the Bone books with my son. In this scene, Smiley suggests Fone Bone read (his beloved) Moby Dick aloud to put their predators to sleep. 😁 And it works.
I read this series with my older son and am now re-reading it with my younger. And I've enjoyed it both times! It's quite funny.

Leniverse I just can't get my kids to be interested in this. They're just totally judgemental from the start: "Why is that character smoking?", "Ugh, is he in love with the human girl now?" ?‍♀️ 3y
merelybookish @Leniverse It was a hard sell with my younger one too. He's so fussy, but he's into it now. When my oldest was young, graphic novels for kids were still pretty scarce so he was pretty game for anything in that genre. 3y
RaeLovesToRead I LOVE Bone! ☺☺ 3y

vivastory That's neat that you are able to share this with your youngest. I read several volumes of Bone when I was in high school. A few years ago I picked up an omnibus at HPB, but haven't looked through it yet. One of the things I'm most looking forward to tomorrow is my weekly Moby Dick reading 👏 3y
merelybookish @RaeLovesToRead It's pretty great! 3y

Mehso-so

This one was so close to being a pick for me. It has a ton of great stuff. There's absolutely no Phoney Bone in this one and the cute animal characters are out in full force. It's even got some pretty good jokes, even the running gags. But the problem is that the main tension in the plot has just started in the last book, and then we take a detour into the mountains. No plot. No updates. A little mythos. Just action and cute. And not much else.
