I wanted to love this book and I wound up just liking it. In reality it needed to be about a thousand pages long and written by Stephen King or Diana Gabaldon. It's such a great idea that's just hamstrung by the YA format. In the end I wound up just being really disappointed that the potential of this story didn't have the room to grow that it really needed.

A nice ominous start

Starting a new book today. Kripke has been touting it as one of the inspirations for Supernatural. It's super short so I'm hoping to bang it out in a single day.

I tried. I really tried. This was a hard choice. The writing is really good and I will say the stories create a very emmersive world. I will remember them for a long time and the first story really was beautiful. But it's just too much. I'm not sure these are world I want to be in. Through the second and third stories I just kept checking the time going whyyyyyy. So yeah...read the first story, then bail. My advice.

I was really jazzed to read this one and it just did not deliver. The science really doesn't hold up to even modest scrutiny and I didn't care enough about any of the characters to be forgiving. Had a really original concept for the zombie infection but that's about it.

At first I thought this was going to be another case of Gaiman not translating well. His works are just so locked into their written medium. But the long get I read this one the more it seemed to work. Maybe even better than it had originally as it had a very Sandman feel to it. Not one of my favorites of his stories but definitely and interesting one.

This one had two of Gaiman's short stories, one of which I don't think I've ever read before. While the art left a little to be desired, in my opinion, I thought they translated well to a visual medium and I enjoyed reading this one immensely.

I had honestly forgotten about this story until just now. God its a good one.

So this was hard. I don't think this is a story that translates very well to a visual medium. It wasn't written that way. The whole story is based around things that we can't quite see and can't quite understand and anything an artist outs down, no matter how good, is going to fall short of our imagination. But it is a good story. And good art. I'd say if you're a Gaiman fan, read the short story first, then check this one out.

So I finally got to see it on stage and of course I have to reread it now. I'm not Maguire's biggest fan but I do enjoy his world building.

So I read this book once and honestly didn't like it. The audiobook, however, is great. It cuts out a lot of Goldman's asides and notes and just tells the story. It's read by Rob Reiner, so it's very much like being read a story by grandpa. Definitely recommend checking it out.

You know...I forgot how emotional this series could be.

What a great first paragraph

This isn't my favorite if the fables books but it does start my favorite storyline, that of Snow and Bigby. You do have to wade through quite a bit to get to it but it's worth it. Very worth it.

Wow did I hate this book. Someone please explain why it's considered a classic. It was less of a mystery and more a list of things talked over ad nauseum to no point and purpose. And the conclusion? A frankly ridiculous theory pulled out of Poirot's ass that has no factual backing from the evidence based on knowledge he could not have had and yet somehow is correct. I hated this book. Christie is hugely overrated in my opinion.

I was SHOCKED by how engrossed I got in this book. I picked it up on a complete whim, didn't even read the back, and boy and I glad I did. It reads just like an old ghost story, reminding me a lot of things like Are You Afraid of the Dark and Watcher in the Woods. So glad I found it and definitely recommend it.

I will say that I DO like the font shift when the old woman narrates. And the fact that her chapters have actual titles. It's establishing a mood something like Watcher in the Woods (film not book) and that's a nice touch.

PET. PEEVE.

I hate when writers start a new paragraph, particularly of a new chapter or the FIRST chapter, with It was. Novice mistake. Not a strong start little book.

Today's #bookhaul theme was apparently "dark as fuck"

There were a lot of reasons I decided to bail on this book. The final straw however was realizing who the love interest was. A man who the main character likens to proof of God. A man who gave her a backhanded compliment, talks about spying on her make out with another woman, and says he'd like to have her handcuffed and waiting. Then there's the manic pixie dream girl that is her best friend or the heavy handed anti-millenial propaganda. Ugh.

I wanted to like this book. It had a very unique and interesting idea and I'd never seen the film. The trouble is that it has no idea how to use its suspense. At a certain point I wasn't so much on the edge of my seat as annoyed. I'm still glad I read it and I'm glad I have this story in my mental library, but it was a bit if a slog.

This one had a lot more action than the first book that's for damn sure. This had at least two audible OMG moments, but what I like most is getting to know more about this world. It's so unique! And it shows just how mundane Once Upon a Time really is by comparison. This is definitely my preferred fairytale mishmash

I waffled on if this was good or just so so. It's a pretty straight forward retelling of Norse myths. There is no cohesive plot it is literally just the tales. What pushed it to a pick for me was that I listened to the audio book and Gaiman is always such a good reader. His voice work has gotten really good too, I particularly enjoyed Fenrir. So, a good intro to the myths, but nothing overly special.

I liked this one...but I liked it less than the first. Rather than being based on Through the Looking Glass (seriously why can no one adapt that?) it seems to be based on Germanic folklore. There are dark woods and goblins and fire demons and a queen that if I'm not mistaken has her roots in the Snow Queen story. A great book really, but not the wonderland based sequel I wanted.

So the moment I saw who was reading it I snapped it up. I love Harry Potter. And I loved Fantastic Beasts. And even though I'd already read this little book, I loved listening to it. Eddie reads AS Newt Scamander which is amazing. There are new beasts, and a new introduction and forward as well as information on the charities this book supports. Any Potter fan should definitely check this one out. #harrypotter #fantasticbeastsandwheretofindthem

I absolutely loved this book. In the wake of those Tim Burton abominations I was beginning to think we'd never see a decent Alice adaptation again. This book is psychotic. It is crazily dark. It has themes of rape and violence against women. There's blood and murder. But it's been written by someone who clearly loves and respects the source. This is a little bit like American McGee's Alice, only somehow even darker. And I ate it up.

As I recall, this is about when I stopped reading while season 8 was still coming out. I don't know why this series just doesn't work. It's no one thing. It's everything. It's got a lot of great parts but they do not add up to a whole, let alone a good whole. I love Buffy so much but I just can't slog through these any longer. There's not enough enjoyment, not enough logic, and not enough of that good Buffy writing.

So I read this once many years ago and retained almost all of it, which is surprising for my spotty memory. It's a really good introduction to a very interesting world, if a bit dry. There's a lot of talking for a comic book, particularly in the last issue. But the characters are interesting and it does keep you engaged. Definitely worth checking out.

I love Sarah's Scribbles. I follow her on tumblr so a lot of this was stuff I've seen before, but it still gets a laugh out of me every time. The new stuff was cute but not as good as the one shot comics she usually does. It's a small part of the book though. It takes barely any time to read this one and its definitely worth checking out.

So this is about the 3rd or 4th time I've read this book and honestly this is the first time I retained anything. This was also the first time I've read the revised edition. Roland is a bit more likable in the revision which I think helps. In retrospect I do think the original version was the better portrait of him but this was much more accessible. I'll be picking up the sequel for sure.

What a crazy ride. This was an insanely dark retelling that turned out to be a lot of fun to read. A lot of classic which stuff and some interesting reimaginings of the main story points. The art does leave something to be desired but it looked very classic so I'll give it a pass.

So I finally got around to reading this. It had a lot more content than I expected. There are batman stories and justice League and Supergirl. There's even a Harley and Ivy story. But the majority of it is a collection of stories expressing our shared feelings. Fear. Sorrow. And the belief that our love is real, and an act of defiance against hate.
