The Girl in the High Tower | 
panQualified as a standalone when it‘s clearly not. I might‘ve liked it after reading the series, but out of context it doesn‘t work. The setting and the people have the potential to be fascinating, but constant references to plot-relevant things outside of the narrow scope of the story are confusing.
(Hmm... In the past I might‘ve stumbled into other supposedly standalone short stories from this universe which also didn‘t work for me...?)
