My #YearInBooks - Worst Read.

How do I decide what my Least Favorite/ Worst is? It's the book that sticks with me. The one that has me ranting at Books & Brews Club. And this year I'm pained to say it's The Rosamunde Pilcher short story.

I had just finished rereading September and I was in the mood for more, so I picked this.
⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Two things I always say about Rosamunde Pilcher: her books are a bit dated in places and short stories aren't her forte. She needs the space of longer novels like Winter Solstice. (My Favorite!) Both of these problems show up big time in The End of Summer.

Crinoline_Laphroaig Jane returns home to Scotland after living in California to find her childhood crush has become a horrible person, who wants to marry her because he's in debt and she's inheriting the Estate. The problem is they're FIRST COUSINS!!! And book setting is 1960s! Why would you do that? It would have been better if character had been written as a childhood friend instead.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Also Jane has absolutely no goals or ambitions. Her grandmother talks about the opportunities for education and careers for young women. When she asks Jane her about plans/ job, she is perfectly content to let her father and grandmother support her. She's the worst kind heroine.

Definitely not Pilcher's best work. But as always Jilly Bond narration is perfect. 🔚

A couple days late, but here's my wrap-up for August. My favorite books were Queenie and Anger is a Gift.

Megabooks Queenie was great! 4y
