Because Author's other mysteries are cozies, I thought this was too. At first it was fine. I really liked that setting was Dingle because I've been there. Story grew much darker than I was expecting. Then it would change into Irish version of All Creatures Great and Small. I wanted a mystery not cats with worms. Also found continued mentions of FMC small size tiresome.

Will probably end up reading 2nd in series for more Dingle.

Picked for #SeasonalCozies because it was highly rated. Turns out a great majority of the 5 star reviews come from author's Cozy Krew Goodreads Group.

Audiobook is dreadful. Obviously wasn't edited. Narrator continually repeats sentences. At the end, there's a spot that sounds like a stuck record. She repeats a sentence over and over and over. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig As for the story itself, I like the idea of town that celebrates all Holidays. Main character is silly, naive, and full of herself. So over the top it's caricature. 5d

#Pemberlittens I've been contemplating color schemes for flower beds up against the house. There are plenty of foundation shrubs for greenery but no flowers. And then replacement copy of In The Garden with Jane Austen. My brick and brick at Chawtow Cottage are a close match! It's giving me lots of inspiration. 🏡

I've been reading over Winter. What I call a quiet read. Not a book to just rush through but one to be savoured.

Beautifully written w/ delightful illustrations. Joy to have in your hands. I especially like when Jane imagines what happens to her characters after her books end.
Ending of this book brought tears to my eyes and touched my heart. I can see myself rereading over the successive winters of my life. ⬇️

LOVE the cover. It's what caught my eye in the store. Also loved character of Gus and how she's not going to fade into the background like a good Spinster should. Hope her brother gets his comeuppance. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig
For all that I love the story, I do feel that the cover is deceptive. Yes there are moments that are just a fun romp. But also tackles some very serious issues about the treatment of women and children in this time which is heartbreaking. Also there is a character with breast cancer and a graphic description of a mastectomy in the days before anesthesia.

That being said I'm definitely going to be reading next book as soon as it comes out.

One of the first books I ever read on making a house a home. Growing up in a dysfunctional family, clutter and chaos was the norm. This book was life changing for twentysomething me. Rereading all these years later, I'm surprised at how many things are part of my routines. Yes, it's a bit dated and pretentious in places, but it taught me so much: seasonal eating, flowers in the house, and setting a pretty table. 🌸

Crinoline_Laphroaig One of things that made this house 'The One' was this little area in the Master Bath. When I'm doing my hair and makeup I'm surrounded by things I love: flowers, candles, and my yoga frog. 🐸 1mo

Cover was beautiful to look at. Loved the setting, traditions, and the food. Romance was rather bland. Also I didn't really care for Holly, she had no common sense. Reveal of why she might possibly lose her job made like her even less.

It was one of the first books to teach me about making a house a home. Published in 1986 I'm sure it's dated but I want to revisit.

"I‘m grateful to my father, LeRoy Looser, for inculcating a love of research and a zest for trying new things. He first picked up Pride and Prejudice three years ago, in his late seventies. I treasure the day he told me, his only daughter, “I just got to the part where Lydia‘s going to Brighton with Mrs. Forster. I don‘t know what kind of trouble she‘s going to get in down there. Finishing up my Christmas Stack.

I love books and Scotland, you would think I would love this book. But it was incredibly inane. Plus I know about First Footing, the way it's used here is silly. You're going to let someone disrupt your wedding because you like to keep the old traditions? And the caviler attitude of 'we'll just move the wedding'.

But hey, managed to get pretty much every Scottish stereotype in.

The End Of Summer | Rosamunde Pilcher
post image
Panpan

My #YearInBooks - Worst Read.

How do I decide what my Least Favorite/ Worst is? It's the book that sticks with me. The one that has me ranting at Books & Brews Club. And this year I'm pained to say it's The Rosamunde Pilcher short story.

I had just finished rereading September and I was in the mood for more, so I picked this.
⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Two things I always say about Rosamunde Pilcher: her books are a bit dated in places and short stories aren't her forte. She needs the space of longer novels like Winter Solstice. (My Favorite!) Both of these problems show up big time in The End of Summer.
⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig ⚠️ Kind of aSpoilery in next comment. ⬇️ 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Jane returns home to Scotland after living in California to find her childhood crush has become a horrible person, who wants to marry her because he's in debt and she's inheriting the Estate. The problem is they're FIRST COUSINS!!! And book setting is 1960s! Why would you do that? It would have been better if character had been written as a childhood friend instead.⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Also Jane has absolutely no goals or ambitions. Her grandmother talks about the opportunities for education and careers for young women. When she asks Jane her about plans/ job, she is perfectly content to let her father and grandmother support her. She's the worst kind heroine.

Definitely not Pilcher's best work. But as always Jilly Bond narration is perfect. 🔚

Another from my Christmas Stack.

I enjoyed Santaland setting and I'm definitely on board for more Holiday mysteries in this Series.

My only complaint was for Nick and April having such a whirlwind romance and marrying quickly, they seemed to have very little chemistry as a couple. Maybe because some people don't want to see Santa and Mrs Claus being affectionate?

My #YearInBooks Least Favorites.

I'd never want to yuck someone's yum when it comes to reading. You should read what makes you happy. So these are my 1 - 2 stars reads.

⭐ Reputation by Lex Croucher
Almost bailed on this but I wasted a B & N audiobook credit on it so I was determined to finish. Horrible people doing horrible things, including sexual assault. Betty was the only character I cared about. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig (ARC) Fun title & I like Palm Springs setting. While it's mentioned in blurb that MC's Aunt has died, wasn't expecting pages of detailed caring for a dying loved one.

Wasn't crazy about the cover to start with. After so much cancer, death, & grief I was bewildered by the choice of shirtless guy on the cover. Very dated and gives the wrong impression of the book. Cover art highlighting martinis & PS architecture would have be more appropriate.⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Then 2nd half of book happened. Billed as a Grumpy/Sunshine Romance but MMC wasn't grumpy he was outright Ass. For most part this wasn't a Romance story but family drama. When it finally got to 'Romance', near the end of story, it felt like I was reading a different book. Suddenly it was all words I probably shouldn't say on Litsy. One word got 12 mentions and another🙀 23. All in the last part of the book. ⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Feels like author couldn't make up their mind what they wanted to write.

My favorite things were Palm Springs setting, architecture, Aunt Fern, and the martinis. Hence 2 stars instead of one. (Appears now that cover has changed on Kindle Editions)⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig I was sceptical because because the last Jenny Colgan book I read had a bratty kid in it and it was annoying. But this series setting is Mure a fictional Scottish Island in the North Sea.

I really enjoyed A Very Distant Shore the Prequel. Was looking forward to more of Saif's life. Book 1 The Cafe By The Sea was a disappointment, Saif was barely mentioned. I trudged on to The Endless Beach. Saif was back, so that was good. ⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Once again there's annoying child who talks baby talk. Apparently that's something Jenny Colgan does. It's particularly jarring because the other children in the story are dealing with actual trauma.

Jenny Colgan is supposed to be a feel good writer but her books just annoy me. I'm done.
⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig ⭐⭐ Resting Scrooge Face
At least it was free and short. I didn't realize this was the same author as The Highland Fling which was a ⭐ read for me last year. This one was not as bad. But it annoyed me just a few pages in with the 'my boyfriend, who I was expecting to propose, broke up with me because I wanted children and he didn't' storyline. ⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig As someone who is Childfree by Choice this just irks me. You would you rather get married and make each other miserable? My other problem is I can suspend some belief with holiday romance stories. But Main Characters we're each others first loves, together for quite awhile and from the same small town, yet didn't recognize the stories and histories that they shared with one another.⬇️

3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I can totally get not being in the festive when others expect you to. And there were a couple of fun moments. So ⭐⭐ for that. Only reason I didn't bail is I finished listening whilst I was doing my hair and makeup. ⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig *All of these authors are going my Don't Waste Your Time List.

⏭️ I'll be back in a bit with my top least favorite/ worst read. 🔚

3mo
Larkken This is great! I love reading 1-2 star reviews for books I really enjoy, and none of these sound up my alley. I was considering giving out some razzies of my own, and now I feel inspired 🙃 3mo

#MonthInBooks

Not bad for setting up house, getting ready to entertain, and hosting Thanksgiving.

Lots of Readalongs:
#NorthangerinNovember #Pemberlittens #HashtagBrigade #JaneAdjacant and the #Chunkster the was Sword Catcher.

I get that it's the first book, so there's a lot of world building. It took about 180 pages for something to finally happen. But then I really like it. So I'm giving a Pick rather than So-So.

Absolutely loved it! It's hard to adapt Jane Austen to modern times but this does it so well. Thanksgiving Chapter was my favorite. Perfect choice since I was also rereading original Northanger Abbey. I finished both in the last few days.

And now it's time to get out the Christmas China!

Why yes I did pour my Thanksgiving champagne out of a flute into this glass because it matched the cover. Thanks for hosting @BarkingMadRead! I find Pym a comfort read. Perfect for this time of year.

I agree with you @IndoorDame that Kindle cover is so ugly. But I went ahead and grabbed it on Hoopla until my pretty purple one arrives. And while I was there I grabbed The Barbara Pym Cookbook. Off to read my chapter.

#Pemberlittens this has always been read at your own pace. Feel free to pop back anytime and comment. There will be a discussion of the whole series posted November. #JaneAndTheExcellentReadalong

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ Reveal of the by-blow. (What a great dated word.) I literally had to stop, talk to myself out loud, and mentally process the family dynamics.

2️⃣ Always dear Jane. But also Edward in this one. As a proud Auntie, loved their relationship.
5mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ "Good lord, I thought suddenly. Had I accepted him, should I have had ten children? —And shuddered at the thought."

"How many heroines had I thrown in the way of such men—the Willoughbys, the Wickhams, the William Elliots?"

"Who knows, after all, what the future may hold?"

Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ I hate cold water. We had a swimming pool for years and I never got into it until as my husband said 'tempature was tepid bath water.' Mostly I like to look at water. I'll ride the current.

5️⃣ It never fails, whenever you're not looking you best, that's when you run into someone you haven't seen in years. I'm going to preserve the mystery, keep him guessing and stay above stairs. However, I will contrive a way to spy on him.
5mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ "The Morning Gazette publishes an intriguing article on Sir Joseph Banks‘s eucalypt, a plant of which one has never heard; the following week one‘s niece announces she intends to plant a eucalypt at her father‘s Kentish estate, if only he may obtain a specimen from the Botanic Gardens at Kew."

Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ I really liked that it circled back to where we started with Jane And The Unpleasantness At Scargrave Manor. Also I'm glad the Final Mystery didn't include Jane's final moments.

#Pemberlittens loved how it circled back to beginning with Harris Bigg-Wither.
"Good lord, I thought suddenly. Had I accepted him, should I have had ten children? - And shuddered at the thought." Wonderful conclusion. Even though it had me ?.

Stephanie Barron did Jane proud.

Pop over to Instagram to see a reel I made for Austenprose Book Tour.

#Pemberlittens I've been rereading Jane Austen as part of #JaneAndTheExcellentReadalong. Emma being published is part of the story from Jane and the Waterloo Map forward.

A few years ago I read this article https://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/20/opinion/jane-austens-guide-to-alzheimers.html... it really changed my perspective of Emma as just a spoiled rich girl. She's parenting a parent. Which I've done and it never easy.

Husband and I recently binged the TV series so it fun read. Little bit different so it had some surprises. Definitely want to read Book 2.
