I'm going to have to agree with Nelly. If you love someone you don't wish them to be unhappy when you die.

This is why I've instructed the Nibilings that when I'm gone I don't want a funeral. I want them to toast my life with my good whisky.🥃

mollyrotondo But Catherine is so miserable! She blames Heathcliff and Edgar for “killing” her but really she caused her own misery. I don‘t feel sorry for her in the slightest. I agree with Nelly but not as it pertains to Catherine. 13h

This book isn't in database but I'm guessing the Shetland Library has it.....Because I'm a gardener, when I travel, I'm always interested in seeing how and what other gardeners are growing. Since I'm not going to see in person this year, I decided to find a book about gardening in Shetland. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig According to Google there doesn't appear to be much choice. I found and ordered this used one from Amazon. According to the Introduction this book, published in 1976, is the first garden book specifically about Shetland.

While it maybe old, it has a wealth of information covering most all the basics. And it has one of my favorite things a Month by Month List of What to Do in the Garden. ⬇️
1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig And the most important thing to know about gardening in Shetland? Shelter - "Where none exists, it must be made." Shelter from the winds, the sheep, and the rabbits. ??‍?

This was the year we were supposed to go to Shetland. I purposely made Raven Black my pick for my January Books and Brews because I knew I would want to reread the Series before we went. And because it's a great choice for January as it takes place starting at New Years and going through Up Helly Aa. We've decided to postpone our trip so instead I will be traveling to Shetland via Book. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm a gardener so I searched out a gardening book. And I already had Shetland cookbook. Also have a ton of books on my Kindle.
3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig And then I discovered Shetland Reel Gin. Husband found some in Dallas when he was there on a business trip a few days ago. Haven't opened it yet. Right now I'm just enjoying how beautiful the bottle is.

Thanks to author Erin Green I discovered Spirit of Shetland Tartan and ordered a @auroraorkneyjewellery scarf. ⬇️
3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig Honestly I'm relieved we've made the decision to wait to travel instead of remaining uncertain. I've a Travel Guide as well because planning is part of the fun. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⛴📚📖🤓

Happy Friday PemberLittens!

Has it's been a crazy week and you're behind?
On a Roll with Chapter a Day?
Or like me, weekends are busier so I read ahead through Sunday?

So I'm grouping these 3 Chapters together. You can discuss one or all here, your thoughts so far, or check out some of the awesome posts in the #WanderingThroughWutheringHeights Tag.

Reading should be fun! Do what makes you happy! 😊

megnews I think I‘m going to read a couple chapters ahead today since I‘ll be on the road for a couple days. 4d
See All 19 Comments
rubyslippersreads I‘ve been sticking to a chapter a day, except for a couple of times when I got so interested I read ahead without realizing it. 4d
TheAromaofBooks I'm ahead because I started reading the on the 1st, not realizing that the group read wasn't starting until a couple days later haha And I'm staying caught up because I'm way more invested in what these crazy people are going to do than I thought I would be! 😂 3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersreads It‘s like watching a train wreck. 3d
suvata Catherine, Isabella, and Heathcliff are reckless and unrestrained. Edgar doesn‘t understand and just stands around thinking, “WTF”. (edited) 3d
bio_chem06 I‘ve been on the struggle bus. I‘m not enjoying this read as much as I wanted😕 3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @bio_chem06 yeah drama get old. 3d
ElizaMarie I finished the book really early because, I am so bad at doing the whole #ChapterADay, But I have been enjoying reading people's thoughts throughout. Anyway, yeah, always behind or ahead! Ha! 3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @ElizaMarie if I wasn't committed to Chapter a Day I would have totally skimmed it just to see how it ended. 3d
I.be.Stef I‘m on chapter 13 and oh my gosh it‘s taking me forever to read😅😂😂 2d
I.be.Stef Anyone else bugged by reading Joseph‘s dialogues? I don‘t understand a word he‘s saying 🤦🏽‍♀️🙇🏽‍♀️ 2d
Lollymya I am still kind of confused…lol 1d
Lollymya Also….I feel like Heathcliff is hurt to his core and doesn‘t know hot to express himself. 1d
Lollymya And I was playing catch-up so I read 15 chapters pretty quickly. Also to Catherine is selfish. 1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @I.be.Stef I've got no clue what Joseph's saying either. 1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Lollymya 15 Chapters! 👏🏻 Catherine sooo selfish. 1d

Heathcliff is back after 3 years and more drama happens.

This had me turning to Google. "Tell her what Heathcliff is: an unreclaimed creature, without refinement, without cultivation; an arid wilderness of furze and whinstone."

Furze is a thorny evergreen shrub. Whinstone is a term used in the quarrying industry to describe any hard dark-coloured rock.

#PemberLittens @jenniferw88 I found a wrong statement in the tagged #BuddyRead:
'... it's possible to read everything she wrote: Six completed Novels, three unfinished ones, three volumes of juvenilia...'

It's 7 Completed, 2 Uncompleted (The Watsons & Sanditon). I think writer considered Lady Susan as Uncompleted when it's actually Completed just Not Published.

Anyhow it has me planning a Yearlong Read of everything. 🤓

#ayearofjaneausten

Crinoline_Laphroaig Which I guess is small mistake, it took me a minute of Google to figure out and going to my completed Novels to find it. But these are supposedly learned people writing these essays. 5d
jenniferw88 Well spotted! 5d
suvata Nice catch 5d
ravenlee There‘s also an error in the Watt essay about Elinor reproving Marianne about accepting the horse from Willoughby. Marianne‘s response is to a different reproof - Elinor‘s censure over Marianne accompanying Willoughby to Mrs. Smith‘s house without chaperone or proper acquaintance with the lady. Which I also just posted about! (edited) 4d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @ravenlee I talked about how I didn't like the pretentious of some the Essays in another post with @mollyrotondo. I think #PemberLittens could match wits with some of these 'Scholars'. 4d

mollyrotondo I am reading from this one! I love it! 6d
mollyrotondo Why do you think it took three years for Catherine and Edgar to finally marry? 6d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mollyrotondo I understood "three years subsequent to his father‘s death." To be just that 3 years since his father died not 3 years later in the story Timeline. But as I'm not a WH aficionado I could be wrong. 5d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mollyrotondo but having just read @MicrobeMom Recap it is 3 years. 🤔 5d
MicrobeMom So true!!! 5d
MicrobeMom @Crinoline_Laphroaig @mollyrotondo took it has 3 years two marry her. But I need to reread and look at the family tree. 5d
MicrobeMom @mollyrotondo so Mr.Earnshaw dies in 1777 and she marries Edgar in 1783. So I think it took 3 year and Heathcliff is gone for 3 years. 5d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @MicrobeMom @mollyrotondo which makes sense because at the start of today's Chapter when Heathcliff returns Edgar is still acting like a Newlywed. 5d

Happiness is waking up early to read the new Detective Matthew Venn Short Story.

Definitely a short story at 16 pages. I finished reading before I finished my morning tea. But Matthew and Jen are there. As well as the beautiful imagery that Ann Cleeves is so brilliant at. The Two Rivers Series is a favorite of mine so it was a lovely treat to start the day.

Monday Morning is my time w/ this #PemberLittens Readalong hosted by @jenniferw88.

Enjoyed Chapter on obtaining Vol 2 of Juvenalia . But the rest of these are just to pretentious for my sake. Feels like 'Let me the Scholar explain things that you the reader are not smart enough to understand.'

Particularly disagreed w/ critiques of Northanger Abbey film & book. NA is satire and when you take it too seriously you miss the point. And the fun.

mollyrotondo I totally agree with you on some of the pretentious writing. As I was reading the NA and S&S essays I thought yeah us Pemberlittens discussed these same thoughts during our chapter a day reads. We know this lol. I do find the essays helpful in painting a clearer picture of the era Jane Austen was writing. I always enjoy a history lesson ☺️ 5d

GingerAntics Oh you‘ve had the Sassenach whisky!!! I‘m still waiting to try it. I need to start this book, too. 1w
Jess_Read_This I love everything about this post. I‘ve been wanting to try the Sassenach whisky! 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Jess_Read_This @GingerAntics I'm enjoying having whisky to drink with the book and I like it but honestly it's overpriced. Which some of that is because it's smaller batches and shipping costs. But it Blended and costs more the Single Malt. I don't see myself going through the hassle of special ordering again. If it becomes more readily available I would buy again. 1w
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig that‘s why I‘ve been putting it off, honestly. It‘s expensive, it has to be shipped. If I could buy it at my local store, I‘d probably get it much sooner. 1w

TheAromaofBooks I did post a family tree that I found online and printed off. It's marked as spoilers because it shows who marries who. But it's helping me a lot with this story! 😂 2w
CrowCAH Is it gossip if it‘s the facts?! 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @CrowCAH "I never gossip. I observe. And then relay my observations to everyone." Biffy 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheAromaofBooks Thank you! I'll take the Spoilers for something I can refer to. 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @megnews I grabbed a screenshot of one. Definitely need to refer to. 2w
mollyrotondo My Penguin classics edition has a family tree that I look at about every 30 seconds 😂 it‘s not a big family but so difficult to keep everyone straight. But I love it 😂 I also love Heathcliff‘s intro into the family. Nelly says how much the kids and mother hated him and were cruel to him. Nelly didn‘t like him either at first but then warmed to him. But she makes a point that it wasn‘t that the Earnshaws were cruel and Heathcliff was kind… 2w
mollyrotondo …Heathcliff wasn‘t the kindest, warmest person either. Everyone in the book seems to be brooding in one way or another. The Earnshaws were definitely despicable toward boy Heathcliff but he was no mild weak child either. Very realistic character writing. 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mollyrotondo it's definitely broody! You make so very interesting points that I haven't thought about. 2w
Bookwormjillk It did help a little but I might be more confused now 🤣 2w
suvata I think I have the family tree figured out but I wonder, if Heathcliff is so rich, why does he live in a house that seems to be considered “shabby” and in need of repair. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @suvata I'm curious about that as well. Hopefully it will be explained as story moves along. 1w
suvata @Crinoline_Laphroaig i‘m sure it will be explained later in the story. 1w

My 2nd Bail of 2022.

In effort to clean off my nightstand and because I've read some less than stellar Holiday Reads, I popped over to Goodreads. Several Reviewers complained about not meeting the 12 of the Calendar and that it's not a Christmas Story but set during Spring/Summer. The only Christmas is just barely mentioned in Epilogue.

I want my Christmas Stories to have Christmas. Shame. It has such a beautiful cover. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Crinoline_Laphroaig I did read the Epilogue. Way to syrupy sweet. 🤢 Oh and apparently the heroine of the book has long dark hair but we put a blond on the cover. #dontjudgeabookbyitscover 2w

Crinoline_Laphroaig @bio_chem06 you're so right! 2w
TheAromaofBooks @bio_chem06 - Right?? Looks like it's supposed to snow, I think what I'll do is stroll across the barren fields with no landmarks and visit my grumpy neighbors who don't even like me 😂 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheAromaofBooks Good times right?🤪 2w
ElizaMarie @CaramelLunacy Ha exactly! Like they were only able to come up with 3 names and then variations of those!? 2w
TheBookHippie This is why I am a Bronte girl and not an Austen girl! BAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I love this book. I haven't reread it in a very long time. I am always amazed people think this is a love story....... 2w

I've got 3 Readalongs going on right now. 🤪

#WanderingThroughWutheringHeights with Kindle, Print, but mostly Audible. My print copy wasn't in the database so I picked a specific one because it's a beautiful edition and so all my posts will be in the same Book Info.

Other #PemberLittens isn't Daily (schedule on @jenniferw88 profile) so I can read on less busy days.

#janeandthetwelvedaysofchristmas is winding down. Only 2 more days.

DivineDiana Finished it yesterday! I did not realize that there was a readalong for (edited) 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @DivineDiana not an organized Readalong. More a me deciding to read over the Twelve Days of Christmas. It did it last year as well. 2w

And we're off #WanderingThroughWutheringHeights!
First impressions #Pemberlittens?

Mine: I plan to listen to Audible the most so I'm really glad it Joanne Froggatt. She has a perfect voice for Narration.

I will post Daily and Tag the Group in the comments. (Will try to do this earlier but it's the Monday after a Holiday Weekend.) Feel free to join in the discussion here or make your own posts. #Chapter1

Crinoline_Laphroaig @sprainedbrain I'm really hoping you chime in with the Memes and @DebinHawaii with the Haikus 🤞🏻 2w

Crinoline_Laphroaig In a Crossover with @jenniferw88 PemberLittens Buddy Read I'm in curious to compare Darcy & Heathcliff. 'Darcy is redefined as a brooding hero mentioned with Heathcliff but that‘s not how Jane or Elizabeth see him. When Elizabeth thinks him arrogant she is not attracted to him. She falls in love once she sees him being good to people....She isn't secretly attracted to dark and brooding.'

2w
Bookwormjillk This is my first read and I was surprised by the first person point of view. I don‘t know why, but I was 🤷‍♀️ 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Bookwormjill my 1st read as well. My only expectation is Heathcliff being surly.😆 2w
suvata Chapter 1 sets up a gothic environment (disturbing engravings in the architecture) and we meet Heathcliff who also may be a little menacing himself. (edited) 2w
bio_chem06 I can‘t wait to get home and read! 2w
ElizaMarie @Bookwormjillk I am listening to this one (my first time) and the first person point of view initially confused me because the narrator (whom I love) is a woman and so yeah 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @suvata it definitely feels Gothic. 2w
TheAromaofBooks I haven't read this one since I was probably 14 or 15, when I absolutely hated it haha So I'm interested to see if my opinion has changed now that I'm quite a lot older!! 2w
EclecticBookLover Very atmospheric. Lately t's been very grey and rainy where I live so it feels like a good time to read this. 2w
MicrobeMom The description of Joseph always makes me laugh! This is a book with little humor, so I always like to point it out. 2w
inthegreensandblues I've read this once before, about ten years ago, and kind of hated it. But I think it may partly have been that it didn't match my expectations. Now that I know what it IS, I'm hoping that I'll enjoy it more this time. And getting other's takes each day will be great! 2w
mom2bugnbee I've never read this one! Looking forward to it. I, too, am listening to Joanne Frogett - love her! We're doing a chapter a day, yes? 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mom2bugnbee yes Chapter a Day. I'll add you to my list for the group tag. 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @EclecticBookLover it's cold here to perfect by the fire read. 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @inthegreensandblues I'm thinking Chapter a Day won't be to bad. 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @MicrobeMom these are definitely some moody people. 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheAromaofBooks I've read the Synopsis I'm pretty sure I'm still going to be Team Darcy at the end of this reading. 2w
mom2bugnbee @Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm in your tags - sorry! I read them in reverse order. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mom2bugnbee no worries! It's a little bit confusing with 3 PemberLittens reads going on right now. 2w
mollyrotondo Definitely would like to be added to this discussion! I read the preface in my Penguin Classics edition and it pointed out that most people expect a romance story. But it‘s really more of a Romantic period story. I‘ve never read this one before so I‘m excited to try to keep my attention on this point. @Crinoline_Laphroaig I also feel like I will be remain team Darcy by the end of this one 😆 but I‘m expecting to like this book! 2w
mollyrotondo Lockwood also seems to be a bit of a dope. A cockeyed optimist maybe. He has such hopes for a friendly relationship with his neighbor that he is totally ignoring Heathcliff‘s true nature. Heathcliff seems simply cruel. 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mollyrotondo I'm adding you to the group tag! Definitely agree on Lockwood and Heathcliff. 2w
witchyreader13 I love classic Literature & gothic tales. Jane Eyre is actually my favorite book. But I've put this book off for years because it sounded like I would hate the main characters & I was afraid I'd hate the book because of them. However, I am now a couple of chapters in & feel engaged in the story, despite Heathcliff being an a$$. 😄 Loving the gothic atmosphere. Can't wait to continue. 😃 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @witchyreader13 I like Jane Eyre. Need to read something by Anne to round out the Sisters. 2w

Oh the Blessed silence of an empty house. Husband who's been on vacation since Dec 23 is back to work. Nibilings left after 2nd long holiday weekends. And while I dearly love them all I'm throughly enjoying finally getting to sit down with this #PemberLittens #BuddyRead hosted by @jenniferw88.

I wish this book was available as ebook because it has so many wonderful quotes.

Intro - E.M. Forrester (Page 25 in my copy)
⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig "The art and passion of reading well and deeply is waning, but Austen still inspires people to become fantical readers." And "the Austen we discover in adolescence is not the same Austen we return to in later life.' Both of these are so true for me. ⬇️

2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Other interesting things: How we label people a Collins, Darcy, Emma, or Miss Bates. It's movies and tv who add the Regency Paraphernalia. Jane rarely describes houses or dresses. ⬇️ 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig And I'm most interested in this - How was Darcy redefined as a brooding hero mentioned with Heathcliff but that‘s not how Jane or Elizabeth see him. When E thinks him arrogant she is not attracted to him. She falls inove once she sees him being good to people. She isn't secretly attracted to dark and brooding. Will be interesting to compare Darcy and Heathcliff while #WanderingThroughWutheringHeights ⬇️
2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig And speaking of which I'm off to listen to Chapter 1 while doing laundry. (I'm not totally slacking) 2w

1st Read of 2022! Yesterday I read just in case I decide to do a #Great2022ParasolverseReread. And it's a great short story to start off the year. 🤓

Perfect day for by the fire my #irlbookclub January Read for the Theme of Cold Book by a Warm Fire. I binged read this series about 4 years ago. Looking forward to reread.

Fun Fact it's warmer in Shetland 45 F/7C than Oklahoma today 28F /-2C

And I'm finished ‼ @Amiable

Switched between Print and Audible. Occasionally taking a break and then catching up. In November Audible released a new Free to Members Edition narrated by Thandiwe Newton. She has such a beautiful voice and really brought the story to life. After that I stuck with audio. Except today when I sat and read the last Chapter.

⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Could I pass a Test or Write a Dissertation on it? Absolutely not. ⬇️

3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig While I still can't call characters by name, I recognize them by their characteristics and storyline. I think I would have to read again or maybe 3rd time for it all to sink in. And unlike Anna Karenina which I hated (Whiny Rich People who happened to be Russian) I could see myself reading War and Peace again. Maybe over some long cold winter. So I'm putting my beautiful Clothbound Classic back on my Forever Shelf for the time being. ⬇️
3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Things that surprise me:

Structure. Part 1, Book 2, Chapter 3??? But then some Editions just went simply in numerical order. Made it confusing when trying to change from Audio to Print or vice versa. Especially because different translations would phrase sentences differently.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig The last short chapter of the 2nd Epilogue, yes there were 2, was all about Philosophy, I think. Honestly I didn't understand a lot of it. Maybe it's too early in the morning or I need more tea. I really should have gotten some Russian Caravan tea for this readalong. ⬇️

3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Long passages that weren't Fictional story but historians discussions of strategies of Napoleon. There was a lot about the Battle of Borodino. Which always reminded me of Chandelier scene from What a Girl Wants movie with Colin Firth and Amanda Bynes. 🤓

#HolidayReads Print Stack. I'd really like to finish all these and then will decide what to keep and what donate to my friends or Library. Need to make some space for the new year. I think I can fit 4 more in during the #12daysofbookmas.

As for tagged book - Didn't like friend to love interest Matt. I really wanted Lumberjack Beard from Date 4 to be the HEA. Definitely not a #forevershelf read

ravenlee I really disliked Matt. And I felt really cheated, because what was the whole point of the twelve dates gimmick if it was just going to be the friend?! 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @ravenlee and now I‘m hoping I'm not really disappointed that I bought her newest book 3w
ravenlee Well…her characters were vivid, and there were some generally funny moments…so as long as the MC doesn‘t miraculously end up back with her ex, maybe there‘s a chance for the new one? 🤞🏻 3w

I love this series and this Book. But that being said it's Scotch Whisky not Whiskey. (See my previous post.) And I saw that ending coming from a mile away. Not the murder but the Georgie plotline.

Curious to see how Historical Facts figure into next one. #royalspyness

@Andrew65 Loving looking back and finding my #12Booksof2021 photos! #May

Not just Romance but also a story of personal growth and learning to stand up for yourself. I'm Childfree by Choice. Stories featuring Single Mum's and Children aren't usually my thing but I LOVED Amelie! Smart and funny. She taught me the meaning of sesquipedalian.
Also loved:
Baking Show Contestants weren't cutthroat but everyone trying their best. And Recipes!

Read as part of Oklahoma Humanities Let‘s Talk About it Book Club - Mysteries set in OK. Definitely falls into The Hero's Journey Narative - Loner sets out to right a wrong. I don't remember any women police officers in a book set in modern day Tulsa. All the women in the story are secondary characters that are either victims or girlfriends. Really??? I moved here in 1999 and there were women on the Tulsa Police Force.
Biggest Complaint ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig *Spoiler* but it needs to be mentioned. (And besides I'm saving you from reading it.) There are no derogatory terms, but a Transgender Woman was a used just for a misleading plot point. Given the amount of violence the Transgender community faces I felt it was inappropriate.

All in all I'm glad I didn't pay money for this Sexist Man's World Book. 🖕🏻

#12Booksof2021 #March @Andrew65

Andrew65 Ooh, I need to read this! 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Andrew65 While some complain about the main character being a Librarian that didn't like Book Clubs or people hanging about the Library she had her reasons why and in the end her character grew and opened up. As for complaints about her awful mother, well not all mothers are nice. Trust me I know. And I appreciate it when Author's don't have the unrealistic redemption of the mother. It doesn't happen in real life. 3w

#12Booksof2021 #February @Andrew65
Only took me 3 months to finish. Started back when first came out and while I was enjoying, I set aside for Happy Holiday Reads. Picked back up at the 1st of February for President's Day. Swapped between Audible and Kindle.

Learned some things like the fact that we have Aaron Burr to thank for mess of The Filibuster. But my favorite parts were when he talked of Michelle and the girls.

Andrew65 Great choice. 3w

Bailedbailed

It's time for #myyearinbooks. I'm usually a finish what I start reader. Especially if I get a few Chapters in, but occasionally I decide early on a book is not for me.

This year's Bails:

All Creatures Great and Small - I know. I know. It's a classic but 1st Chapter discussion of all the ways birthings could go wrong had me saying nope. Just going to watch the lovely PBS version.

The rest in comments.
#myyearinbails

Crinoline_Laphroaig Agatha Christie is famous for inventing so many of the tropes of Modern Mystery but her books often have dated language. (Just Google what the original name of And Then There Were None was.) In this book it was the way a gay man was referred to at the beginning. And yes you can say it was a different time but I just wasn't in the mood for it.
3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig The Last Necromancer - a Kindle freebie I had forever. Just couldn't get into it. And when that happens sometimes I go to Goodreads to see what others say. 'Does it start slow but get better?'In this case it was some reviewers talking about the abuse of women in the story, so I deleted and moved on. 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig And then there was my fall down the Rabbithole when looking for A Christmas Carol Retellings for my Books & Brews Club. Now I'm pretty Liberal when it comes to books but I didn't need Marley into bondage or The Cratchits having sex all over the place. Thankfully it was Free. 🤢
