Hello PemberLittens! It's time for #JaneandtheExcellentReadalong discussion. I love this fits in with my #SeptemberbytheSea and Fictional Hangover Book Club Challenge - #YoHoHoAhoyMateys. While technically they were smugglers, but we love a #TenuousLink. Anywhoozle if you haven't finished reading and don't want be Spoiled come back later.

There be Spoilers in the Comments ‼️☠️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1. Jane going out to investigate in the middle of the the night. Playing the hapless hysterical female with Mr. Crawford and then stealthy maken her way to the beach.

And of course anytime Lord Harold shows up.

2. "The only consolation in foul weather is to turn one‘s lock upon the street, and settle in by the fire with tea and a good book -"
4d
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3. Jane's Father: “Are you intending to pay a call, my dear? And in the middle of the night?” How he respects her judgment and just lets her get on with things.

4. Jane falling asleep in the cave. Also I'd forgotten how active she was in this book - Ducking through neighbors yards, following men through a cavern, knocking out the murderer.

5. Lyme's Fossils. It was interesting to Google and see pictures.

6. Still contemplating this one.
4d
See All 14 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7. Depends - are there snakes in England? If so I'm not going in the creepy cave. Someone else will have to solve the mystery. I'll just take a nice gentle stroll on the beach and look for Fossils.
4d
BarkingMadRun I‘ll come back to this later, I started late so I‘m not done yet! 4d
Ruthiella 1. That kiss in the jail! 2. No quote 3. Sidmouth was my fav. 4. The resolution of the mystery surprised me! 5. It was interesting to learn about British support for anti-Napoleon espionage. 6. Jane is a constant month-maybe May? 7. I would definitely prefer to collect fossils over exploring a dark cave! 😂 Thanks for hosting! 🙏 3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Ruthiella I love how we know Jane's story but author manages to fit in this little flirtations. 3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig Iteresting Blog post on Author's Website. It's about someone who tried to steal ths story & make movie. http://francinemathews.blogspot.com/2018/10/bookbub-special-jane-and-man-of-clot... the sum of it was: She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named informed me self-righteously that I did not own Jane Austen! I did not own history! I did not own the private journals Austen had penned two hundred years ago... ⬇️
3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig "At which I tumbled to the appalling truth: She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named thought Jane's diaries recording her detective adventures, which I invented purely as a framing device for a series of mystery novels, actually existed.

She'd never seen them, of course. She had no idea where said journals might be archived. She'd just read a paperback edition of Jane and the Man of the Cloth and assumed it was all true." ?
3d
i.besteph Hi can you please remove me from the tag list? I‘ll have to read this some other time 😅 3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @i.besteph will do! 3d
MoonWitch94 I loved the month comparison. I think it‘s pretty valid. I would classify Jane as a Spring month….perhaps May like @Ruthiella suggested! 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @MoonWitch94 May yes! My friend Claire on Instagram said April because it contains multitudes and she felt Jane has them to. 2d
MoonWitch94 @Crinoline_Laphroaig OH!! That‘s a good point, too! 2d

This was a delightful cozy steampunk romance. And while yes it could be read as a Standalone I feel I might have gotten the 'world' a bit better had I read others in this series. Didn't detract from my enjoyment just makes me want to read Broken Gears Trilogy.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I know this is supposed to be funny, but I find mom catfishing guys and sending daughter on blind dates creepy. And WTF? Daughter agrees to go on date, (with uncharged phone)then doesn't leave when the guy is a jerk, but rather gets tipsy and let's him drive her home? I can't even with this girl and her absolute lack of common sense.

nanuska_153 @TheBookHippie this is great news! I haven't started yet, I'm behind with Jane Eyre and A secret sisterhood 😓 hopefully I'll catch up with all of them before the end of the month 3w
TheBookHippie @nanuska_153 my favorite so far is the Christmas one I read a few years ago - not realizing it was a series!!! I‘m not sure what number that is 😂 however this one is more readable to me, the last one I struggled. Good luck catching up! 3w
TheBookHippie @Ruthiella it seems more readable to me or I‘m so intent on ignoring the airplane rides I‘m taking 😂😫. 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie @nanuska_153 @Ruthiella @janeycanuck The Christmas one is no 12. I remember because it's the 12 Days of Christmas. I found interesting in the authors Blog Post she says she often tells people to start with Book 2 because it's a stronger book. She responded to a Tweet of mine the Book 2 is one of her favorites. 2w
Ruthiella @Crinoline_Laphroaig I have inadvertently started series out of order, but if I know it‘s a series from the get-go the compulsion to start with book one is STRONG! 😆 2w

I read this book ages ago. I'm guessing back when it was first released. It's been on my All Things Austen Shelf since then. After reading some Goodreads Reviews I have a vague memory of it. Decided to reread to see if it deserved to be on my Forever Shelf.

1️⃣ the Cover. Why is this person wearing what looks like 1950's clothes when it's setting is Modern Day and Time Traveling to Jane Austen's day? It makes no sense what so ever.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 2️⃣ the love interest Spike is an asshole. I'm sorry there is just no other word for it.⬇️ 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig AND THEN the tour visits Chawton Manor and claims it was home to Jane Austen in the latter part of her life and it's where she revised Pride and Prejudice. Except we #PemberLittens know she DIDN'T! She lived down the road at Chawton Cottage. Her brother lived at the 'Big House'. ⬇️

3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig All the things that happened at the Cottage, her small writing table, the creaky door, this book attributes to the stately Chawton Manor. Apparently this author didn't even manage to do the bare minimum of Research and her Editor didn't do their job either. ⬇️

3w

Crinoline_Laphroaig I can't believe this book has been taking up space on my shelf for YEARS. I'm guessing I meant to get rid of it but forgot and then after awhile it was just there.🤬 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @CaramelLunacy the answer is this book is crap. 3w
KristiAhlers Yeah I wasn‘t a fan I was a total DNF and donated it. 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @KristiAhlers it's definitely going in the Goodwill box 3w
CaramelLunacy Oof! I found my old review and was apparently mad that for a woman who re-read Pride & Prejudice every year, she didn't seem to have even a basic grasp of its plot or that it wasn't Victorian... I didn't write anything down about Spike, but the hazy impression I retained matches what you say. Best to send it off in disgrace. 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @CaramelLunacy Sending off in Disgrace! I must remember that. 3w

Read it ages ago. After looking at Goodreads Reviews I vaguely remember it. Want to see if it's still worthy to be on my #ForeverShelf.

I'm catching up on my Seasonal Readalongs this afternoon. This is such a beautiful book. Divided into section Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. I've really enjoyed my reread.

"Autumn is the season of the Equinox, of fierce gales and big tides.....

There are no more cruise ships in the harbour in Lerwick. #Pemberlittens I'm so onboard for Mary Bennet being a spy! It's always the quiet ones like The Wallflower in Gail Carriger's books. Little slow in the middle. There was a lot to set up but worth it for the Ending. I look forward to the next book. 😊

Crinoline_Laphroaig Audiobook Note: This is not a critique of Book or Author strictly the Narrator. She mispronounced Maria Lucas's name repeatedly. I looked her up. She done a ton of Austen. Are you a Seasonal Reader?

I am, but Sep is always a bit of a conundrum. Usually have several Summer Reads I'm trying to finish over LDWknd.

Technically today is the start of #meteorologicalautumn the Autumnal Equinox isn't until Sep 22nd. Still feels like Summer here in Oklahoma.

Do I continue w/ Summer Reading or swap to Spooky Stories?

#MountTBR says I should continue w/ Summer Reading & wait for Oct to start fall reads 🍂🍁🎃🧛‍♀️👻

Ruthiella I don‘t think I am a seasonal reader at all. I do occasionally aim at least to read spooky books in October, but I usually fail even at that! 😂 1mo

Dragged at first but picked up at that turning point in Jane's life of jilting Harris Bigg-Wither. Had a vague feeling that I might have read this before. Or maybe it's because I've read so much Austenesque.

Neither loved it or hated. But that's partly me. You may like it. I prefer things like #janeandtheexcellentreadalong rather than something like this that is written as Historical Memoir from Cassandra's POV.

Enjoyable Cozy Mystery featuring members of Jane Austen Society in Yorkshire. Particularly loved all the cats named after Austen Characters.

#Pemberlittens it's time for discussion of Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor‼️(There will be Spoilers so turn back now if you haven't finished reading.)

Because this is a Reread for me my opinion can't help but be influenced by overall Series. This is a great start and books only get better.

My answers in the comments!

#janeandtheexcellentreadalong

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1. Editor's Foreword. This is my 3rd time reading - most recently #janeandtheyear2020 and I still get excited. Lost Austen manuscripts⁉️ And then I realize it's part of the storyline.

2. "But I suppose your family is mortified? They always are,” she finished cheerfully, “when women think for themselves."

3. Besides Jane, her Sister in Law, Eliza of the above quote.

4. Reciver of mail not sender paid the postage.⬇️

1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5. I'm good with footnotes when it's not a ton of them and the way they are done here - included on the page read or narrator reads at the appropriate time. Annotated books with all the notes at the end of the Chapter I find annoying.

6. Learned about yoga from one of her sailor brothers. She does a headstand every morning.

7. Going against what is expected of you always requires great courage. ⬇️
1mo

Ruthiella I liked how the author integrated Jane‘s family connections (Eliza, Henry, James) into how she obtained her information. 1mo
BarkingMadRun @Ruthiella yes! It‘s always nice when you have a little background already, going into a book! 1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Ruthiella @BarkingMadRun I like how well researched these books are. And how they work around moments in Jane's life. 1mo

Crinoline_Laphroaig @Deblovestoread me too! And I've read it 3 times. 😄 I'll change your name in my Tag List. 1mo

janeycanuck Just got my copy so I‘m hoping to start & finish this weekend! 1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @janeycanuck yay! I'm liking this read at your own pace Readalong. Makes it easier for people. 1mo
mollyrotondo I also had to remind myself that that part was also part of the fictional story 😂 I enjoyed this one very much. I loved that her family was involved. I also loved how Barron incorporated themes and styles from most of Austen‘s novels. The gothic style, themes from Sense and Sensibility, Eliza who is reminiscent of Lady Susan, and even the Austen trope of men not always being what they seem (Trowbridge). I‘m excited to read book 2! 1mo
myellenbee First, so happy to have found a new series. Standout moments as mentioned, the finding of Austin papers, sidetracked to look up then realized it was part of the story, introduction of Eliza and Cranley as detectives with Jane. 2.quote"and like every novel of manners written by my contemporaries this story ended in marriages all around" Laughed out loud. 3. Lord Harold Trowbridge. 4. Learned accused couldn't be defended well. 1mo
myellenbee 5. Yes to these footnotes, learned a lot, eg cashierment as dishonorable discharge. Jane showed courage not settling for an unhappy marriage. As society was set up it was really more selfish of her brothers to begrudge supporting her. 1mo
myellenbee I thoroughly enjoyed how Barron made so many slight references to some of Austen's books. For example the Water room in Bath how she hated it but it is almost a character in Northabinger Abbey. What is next to read ? 1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mollyrotondo Yay! Glad you enjoyed! Lord Harold is a favorite of mine! 1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @myellenbee it's no wonder there is that whole opening of Sense and Sensibility and how the brother treats the Dashwood sisters. 1mo

This is one of the most beautiful books I've seen in a long time. Cover looks like embroidery and the inside of book jacket like the backside with nots and threads. It's a brilliant idea for a cover. Sadly I don't know that it has earned space on my Forever Shelf.

While I LOVED Ms. Austen, by the same Author, I enjoyed Godmersham Park. It dragged a bit at the first but once Jane showed up I couldn't put it down. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig I think the thing that I had the most trouble with was Henry Austen showing up everywhere without his wife Eliza. I'm used to seeing them as a happy couple in Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen Mysteries. I'm not sure which is Historically accurate but I hope it's happy Eliza & Henry. And that's thing with Historical Fiction author can write it however they see fit.

This has been my least favorite Rosamunde Pilcher. They're always a bit dated but usually a comfort read.

Main Character is just way to whiny and weak. The mysterious surgery for women's issues that if it doesn't work will have to have Hysterectomy. Plus the ‘If I can‘t give you a child, I can‘t give you anything.‘ storyline wasn't my thing.

Well that didn't happen. Can't believe this book has been taking up space on my Shelves for 2 years. At least I can get it off my #AusteninAugust TBR. See my previous post for Rant on 1st Editions.

I don't consider myself a Austen purist. You can modernize, add Vampires, make it Steampunk as long as you keep the Spirit of Jane Austen. This is not the Spirit of Jane. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig There no Historical basis for Jane having to being miserable to write. Or that she regretted not being a wife and mother.⬇️ 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig "She imagined having one of her own, and the child gorgeously sucking Jane dry. She would feed it, wake when it woke, and feel pride in being the only one able to soothe it. This pride would hypnotize her and occupy her time. The little life would swallow up everything, murdering the whim to nurture anything but itself."⬇️

#Pemberlittens ?‼️

If you're going to write Austenesque you should know that original novels were not written in one book. Pride & Prejudice was 3 Volumes.

“The producer gave them to me as a gift when I signed on to do the film. I‘d prefer jewelry, but never mind. These are nice. First editions, I believe.”

A momentary silence filled the house as Jane stopped breathing. She stared at the six books that now lay on the table."

Crinoline_Laphroaig Such a dumb mistake. It didn't serve any purpose for the books to be First Editions. Cheap paperbacks would have worked to get the point across to Time Traveling Jane that she was a published author. 2mo

Hello #PemberLittens. I'm been giving some thought to how I want to do #janeandtheexcellentreadalong and here's what I've come up with:
15th of the month - Spoiler Free, Background Info and First Impressions.
30th of the month - Book Discussion full of Spoilers. I'll Post Discussion Questions.

In a Facebook Live earlier this year, Author talks about why she decided to start Series where she did. I'll post link in comments. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Some of the history we PemberLittens already know but it's interesting insight into the Author's Work. https://www.facebook.com/thepoisonedpenbookstore/videos/640115083968103/ 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig "The thought of an eternal fireside tête- à- tête with Mr. Bigg- Wither; the endless presiding over the Bigg- Wither teapot; the possibility of little Bigg- Withers, all equally as dull as their father— such nightmares were enough to chasten me by morning.” 2mo

Crinoline_Laphroaig I had forgotten this book takes place in winter. Which is nice as the highs have been in the 100F/38C range for days. 2mo
AllDebooks I'm struggling to like it, if I'm honest. Happy to forward my copy to anyone in UK. 2mo
Bookwormjillk I had trouble keeping the characters straight at first, but am now enjoying it at about 60% in. 2mo
rubyslippersreads I haven‘t started it yet, but will soon. 2mo
Ruthiella I don‘t quite buy that this is a lost Austen manuscript, but it‘s otherwise entertaining enough. I‘ve read up to chapter 11. The plot thickens in chapter 10! 2mo
DivineDiana @Ruthiella Agree! As I was born in Baltimore, I became very excited when I read the Foreword. Then, I realized that this fact of discovery was all part of the story. Not overly thrilled with the writing. The word ennui keeps popping up every few pages. Up to Chapter 15. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Ruthiella @DivineDiana that Intro threw me when I first read. And then I realized it's supposed to be part of the story. 2mo

#Pemberlittens - This one was at the Top of my #AusteninAugust stack. Mostly enjoyable read, especially for Janeites, but didn't earn a spot on my All Things Austen #ForeverShelf.

Things I liked:
Loved the cover.
House Party Murder Mystery featuring favorite Austen characters.
Emma being Emma: "To murder someone in another person‘s house!” Emma threw up her hands. “It is the height of rudeness! Can you imagine?” ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Elizabeth and her sister Mary are now friends.

Catherine Tilney is an author. Her grown daughter Juliet and Elizabeth Darcy's son Jonathan team up to solve the murder.

The Darcy‘s as parents of a grown son. Elizabeth to Darcy: "Did you never teach him how you escaped the many snares of Caroline Bingley?” ⬇️

2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Jonathan is written as Neurodivergent. While he doesn't understand reasons for the Rules of Society, he uses them to navigate the world when unsure.

I'd never given any thought to what would happen with Lydia and Wickham having a child. Especially since neither one is parent material. Interesting to see that explored.

I can totally see Edmund Bertram turning into a sanctimonious prig.⬇️
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Things I Didn't Like:
Elizabeth and Darcy being estranged. While it served a purpose in the story and didn't last, I don't want a world where they're not happy. ⬇️
2mo
See All 9 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig My BIGGEST COMPLAINT is Minor Spoiler so I'll hide it below.⬇️ 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig The Letter. No one with an ounce of sense or self preservation would have written that letter. Top that off with the family member who received it, kept it, and storyline of I will do anything to protect them. When all they had to do was burn the letter in the first place. So everytime The Letter came into play it had me shaking my head. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Once I figured out who Killed Mr. Wickham, I knew how story would end.⬇️

2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Would love to see Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy married and solving crimes as a couple.

Mehso-so

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a mother in possession of great wisdom, must be in want—nay, in need—of a daughter who will listen.”

Cute opening line but this mother was a horrible person. She was constantly verbally abusive to her daughter. And it was justified by her and other characters with I/She justs wants what's best for you. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig There were things I liked Baking, Pride and Prejudice Retelling but ultimately I'm glad this was a Borrow not Buy for #austeninaugust. Minor Spoiler ⬇️
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Mother tells daughter she can't compete in Baking Contest because it would appear to be favoritism if daughter won. Yet the mother who created Contest and Judges it; is actively helping Contestants. Plus she picked all the Contestants based on trying to set her daughter up. 2mo
CaramelLunacy A shame, that cover is too cute 2mo

If Mildred from #ExcellentWomenandBoiledPotatoes ran away to the county and became a witch. 😆

Crinoline_Laphroaig A weird little book. Starts off Barbara Pym-ish. Next thing you know we've escaped to the country and become a witch.

Beautiful writing. Divided into 3 Parts with no Chapters which makes it feel like it is rambling sometimes. I like Chapters because it gives you a natural break.

Fun Fact the very 1st Book of the Month Selection from 1926.
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Kind of a Spoiler but I was glad to know. 2mo

Preorder Swag! Particularly loved the adorable tea tin. Also it has autographed book plate sticker and Activity Book filled with quiz, puzzles, scrambles, etc.

As for the book: My most anticipated books of summer. Few days before release, I saw 2 Star Review of ARC from someone whose opinion I trust. Then I saw that it was a riff of 4 Weddings & a Funeral, so I guessed how the story would end. So I was expecting the worst. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig For the most part I really enjoyed. Even when characters relapsed into bad behaviors. Alexis Hall said he want to write about the after, which isn't done much in Romance. ⬇️ 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Reality is people have set backs. Long term relationships aren't all sunshine and roses. That being said the arguing over the Rainbow Balloon Arch and what it stood for got tiresome. Anyone in a long term relationship will tell you, that you have to learn to compromise. Also there was never any discussion of the Big Things: Children, House or Apartment, Life Goals, etc.
⬇️
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I didn't expect Luc & Oliver to get married, I know how 4 Weddings & a Funeral ends. But at the end of Ch 39 everything seems to have been resolved, and then BOOM, they both suddenly change their minds. Especially Oliver? It just comes out of the blue. And the thing is I totally get what he is saying about marriage. If this conversation had come a bit earlier in the book it would have worked for me. Putting it in the last 20 pages was jarring. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig
I'm fairly generous when it comes to stars. This was definitely more than 3 for me but not a solid 4. There so much I liked in this book. I literally cheered during the Funeral Section. And I love Luc's mom she is such great example of how to parent a grown child.

⬇️
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig This felt like it needed a To Be Continued at the End. My rating would have been lower if I hadn't know there is going to be a Book 3. And since we are talking RomCom's I'm reminded of that Scene from Love Actually when the say the fate of the party hangs on the next song. The fate of this book hangs on the outcome of the next. 2mo

I'd never heard the name Everard until
#excellentwomenandboiledpotatoes Readalong. Now it's popped up in Current Read: "Everard, the eldest son...." is ancestor of Lolly.

I picked this out from Book of the Month because it was the very 1st #BOTM back in 1926.

Wow. I'm not usually a reader of Apocalyptic stories. But Fictional Hangover https://www.fictionalhangover.com/ is covering it this week and PC Cast will be guest on Podcast.

Really enjoyed it. I'm curious to see where she takes this in the 2nd book.

I'm from Oklahoma so I recognize all the Locations mentioned. So that was fun. And I've definitely met the holier-than-thou Karen of this book.

Here's the plan #PemberLittens:

*Book a month starting in August. I know that's just a few days away. But that has us finishing in September 2023 in time for mid October release of last book in the series Jane and the Winchester Schoolboy.

*I'll make a Discussion Post on the 15th & 30th of every month.

*If at anytime you need to opt out, just say the word. No Worries.

Hashtag will be:

SQUEALS IN DELIGHT‼️ I would love to Host #PemberLittens Readalong to get ready for last book in the Jane Austen Mysteries Series. Maybe a Book a Month??? There are 14 Books. Chapter a Day might be hard to do. Maybe once a week Discussion Post? Would need to start in August 2022 or September 2022 at the latest.
