Timeline Readalong - Elfrida vs The Toaster.

I love how Rosamunde Pilcher takes everyday life and turns it into a story. Elfrida wanting to buy a toaster but worrying about the cost. You see how her decision to move to Scotland affected her finances.

Pages for reference:
Hardback (Flowers in the Snow Cover)pgs 153 - 174
Paperback (Red Coat Cover)pgs 229 - 262
Kindle (Snowflake)pgs 173 - 197
Audio - Chapter 9

#Pemberlittens last #JaneAdjacent Book Club read of 2024‼️ #JaneAustenThenAndNow begins in January.

When choosing books for #12MonthsOfJane I knew Yuletide was perfect for December. Short stories are wonderful during the busy holiday season. Plus there's something for everyone. And I love that it benefits Chawton Great House. Grab your copy and enjoy over the festive season. Discussion Post will be up December 30th. 🎁

It's always hard for a sequel to live up to expectations. Especially a book as beloved as The House in the Cerulean Sea. My favorite thing was seeing the Baker-Parnassus family being happy.

#Pemberlittens It's time for #JaneAdjacent Book Club. My answers:
1️⃣ Print Copy. I wanted a Northanger Abbey retelling for this month. November just seems the perfect time
for Northanger Abbey. Cover caught my eye. I just love it! Didn't realize the setting is November. Or that it was Time Travel.

2️⃣ I really liked Mr Austen in the past story.

3️⃣ Love a Book Fair!

⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ ‘Oh, you like Jane Austen…..
Yes I believe many men do, though some people think she's an author just for girls, I suppose.

Unbelievable, Who on earth would think like that?‘

5️⃣ You had me at biscuits. ⬇️
2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ This is from my Goodreads Review of The Mysteries of Udolfo:
‘I was so happy to hear The End…..
Apparently there weren't Editors in 1794 when this was published. It rambles on and on and on. I could only take so much of the Histrionics. I would bail for a while. Finally I can get this 31 h 15 m 42 s mess off my phone.‘ ⬇️

2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ I found the notes about the Rice Portrait of Jane Austen interesting. I've seen the image countless times, but didn't realize that it may be Jane Austen herself. 2w

The Dratsie Dilemma: San Andreas Shifters | Gail Carriger, G. L. Carriger
post image
Pickpick

My early morning tea and read last few days.
Marvin the Merman has always been my favorite of the San Andreas Shifters ever since I first met him in Gail Carriger's short story Marine Biology. (It's free when you sign up for her newsletter The Chirrup.) He always sparkles . It was interesting to see a more serious side to him. Also learning more about merfolk. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig But that Epilogue is what I love most about this series. “You‘re the strangest merman I‘ve ever met.” Marvin patted his shoulder. “I know, honey. But just look,” he gestured widely at the massive barbecue. “We like adopting strays.”🧜🏼‍♂️
3w
catsuit_mango I loved the new story and learning more about merpeople. Do you think we will get Kevin's story one day ? And who is the strange lady in the café, we did not get the full story on her.... 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @catsuit_mango ya what was up with her? Also there keeps being mentions of the fact that Alec and Marvin aren't married. I forget which book it is but Marvin says he's waiting on Alec to ask him. Why haven't you asked Alec????? 2w
catsuit_mango @Crinoline_Laphroaig the good news is that it leaves a lot of new stories open if Miss Gail wants to keep writing that series :) 2w

My #great2024parasolversereread is moving on to Imprudence in November. On track to finish by end of year. I love Gail Carriger! Discovered her on Litsy. Read Library books first and then started collecting. After the house fire she sent me everything she could to replace.

Her books are so pretty. Something she once talked about in a Facebook Live. How she pays attention to how covers will look together.

Pemberlittens It's time for #JaneAdjacent. My answers:
1️⃣ First read. Print copy. First Impression - overly wordy. Everything is described in great detail. As member of Fictional Hangover https://www.fictionalhangover.com/ Vampire Book Club, I've read quite a few Vampire books. This is by far one of the worst.
⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 2️⃣ Annie was the only character with any sense. Elizabeth was just so accepting of everything. As a reader of Pride and Prejudice, I'm supposed to just believe no one noticed Darcy avoids sunrise/sunset and barely eats?
3️⃣ Darcy turning into a bat hilarious.

4️⃣ I had a quote marked but I've lost it. Honestly can't be bothered to go back and find.

5️⃣ Paris has Pain au Chocolat. ⬇️
1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ Bad enough that nothing happened for over 200 pages. Just Darcy and Elizabeth traveling around Europe. But the Indian Jones scene and the 'Wait! True Loves Kiss can turn you back human!' had me rolling my eyes.

7️⃣ I was so glad to finish this book. #12monthsofjane @julieclair @SarahBookInterrupted @willaful @mctrish @LitsyEvents @Julsmarshall @DebinHawaii

julieclair I decided to skip this one because I just couldn‘t deal with the idea of Mr. Darcy as a vampire.🧛 Looks like I made a good choice! Although…. Sometimes discussing a really bad book together can be so much fun. 😆🙃 1mo

Absolutely loved! Characters and relationships were true to original while telling a new story. Particularly liked Mr. Woodhouse. Also managed to included poultry thieves. Knightley and Emma as a married couple was totally believable. Was nice to see them making the situation of living with Emma's father work. Mystery kept me guessing to the end. Just a fabulous read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#Pemberlittens there be Spoilers ahead‼️🏴‍☠️ #JaneAdjacent

1️⃣ First read. Print. I liked that mistaken identity didn't go on for a long time. Darcy being accused of being a pirate could have been much darker and that's not something I want to read.
2️⃣ Always Elizabeth
3️⃣ Elizabeth figuring out who the Captain really was. Which leads me to my favorite quote.
4️⃣ “Thank you, again, for the dance, Mr. Darcy.” ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ Life has been non stop. Would gladly spent a quiet summer at Pemberley.
6️⃣ I understand he was doing it for Elizabeth and the rest of the family but Lydia did get off easy.
7️⃣ I've read Steampunk Darcy by Monica Fairview. That was awesome. Confined with Mr Darcy by L L Diamond was Covid/Lockdown that I really enjoyed.
8️⃣ I couldn't find an audiobook. I think it would have been fun.

Mehso-so

This reminds me of Barbara Pym novel but with sex. Nothing much happens. Just a view into people's everyday lives. Has one my pet peeves - overly long chapters. I hate to stop in the middle of a chapter. I found myself losing interest because it rambled on. If chapters had been shorter, could have read a few pages here and there and it would have been more enjoyable. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig My favorite quote "I could never have married a man who didn‘t simply dote on Jane Austen or Henry James,‘ she had said years ago. Alan had been the most satisfactory devotee and often talked of Donwell and Pemberley and Poynton—their aspect, the soil on which they stood, the position they commanded— as if he had just recently been staying at them." 3mo

It's time for #JaneAdjacent Book Club.
1️⃣ New read. Audio and Print. I read Ghosted - A Northanger Abbey Novel with #PemberLittens last year. So when I saw the author had written a book about Georgie Darcy, I immediately wanted to read. LOVE the cover.
2️⃣ Always Lizzy Bennet.
3️⃣ Georgie and Lizzy conversations. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ “My big brother, Fitzwilliam Darcy, could suck it.” Great opening. Set the tone.
“I could help Fitz Darcy be happy, for once in his goddamn life.”

“Me and my new boyfriend, this charcuterie platter, are going to find somewhere we can be alone.”

5️⃣ I always feel like September/after Labor Day is the perfect time for a fresh start. Give me a new planner, colored pens, pencils, stickers and I'm sooo happy.
4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ No, I wasn't in Band but I love to watch them.

7️⃣ I'm kinda of klutzy, so tripping over my own feet is something I'm used to. Plus I feel like that would be easier to recover from.

8️⃣ Wickham plays trumpet? For some reason I found that hilarious. Then the fact that he was a great trumpet player but too cool to show up for practice seemed so Wickham. Also I could totally see modern Wickham running a plagiarism ring.⬇️
4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I spent some time at the beginning of the book yelling at Georgie when she made bad decisions. I really enjoyed when she stood up for herself with Wickham and had adult conversation with Darcy.

willaful 1. New read. I chose audio, which was mostly very good, except for a tendency to feel OTT in the more emotional passages. I generally liked it and would read more by the author.

2. I also really liked this book's Lizzy.

3. George and Fitz by the hot tub.

4. Since I listened to the audio, i don't have text to refer to. :-( The opening is very funny.

7. I'd much prefer being able to make expensive mistakes and not be worried about the money than to fall. 😂

8. I thought this was a clever take and an excellent way to approach the retelling for a YA audience. Much better than the “remixes“ recently published.

Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful there were moments when the angst was just to much on audio. Especially at first. But I enjoyed it not quite as much as 4mo

On this day in 1816, Jane Austen finished writing Persuasion. How fitting that I finished reading for Thursday's Jane Austen's House Virtual Book Club. "You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope." ? #Pemberlittens

It's time for Austen in August! And while yes I do tend to celebrate Jane Austen all year long, it is tradition to read as much as possible in August.

Up first is Persuasion for next week's Jane Austen House Museum Book Club. My collection isn't as big as my Pride and Prejudice one, but some lovely editions none the less. 🎩📖📚

Absolute delight as always rereading Pride and Prejudice for the umpteenth time. I'm particularly happy that because I did Chapter A Day with a Facebook friend as well as #PemberLittens, I will have something Pride and Prejudice every day from June 1st to July 31st in my Facebook memories. 🎩

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ Reread but I didn't remember anything specific. I vaguely remember reading after the movie came out. After hearing a major spoiler about death of a character in later book, I had no desire to continue.

Started with print I was struggling, so I borrowed Library audiobook so I could get through it. Finally finished this morning in print. ⬇️
5mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig First Impressions: ‘129 lbs. (but post-Christmas)‘....... ‘130 lbs. (terrifying slide into obesity—why? why?), alcohol units 6 (excellent), cigarettes 23 (v.g.), calories 2472.‘

What the HELL? More on this below. 2️⃣ Always Darcy.
3️⃣ When Bridget is watching Pride and Prejudice and discussing Mr Darcy vs Mark Darcy.
4️⃣ “Mr. Darcy would never do anything so vain and frivolous as to be an actor and yet Mr. Darcy is an actor.”⬇️

5mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ Turkey Curry Buffet. Surely I could find something to eat.

6️⃣ Would depend on my mood that particular day. It could be enjoyable to wear eccentric outfit and make up outlandish stories. But then again a Duvet Day sounds lovely.

7️⃣ I'm keeping a journal about this first year in my new house. Also have a gardening journal. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 8️⃣This book hasn't aged well. Bridget's obsession with her weight, the way she goes from binge eating to dieting is so unhealthy. She's not overweight, she has no self worth. It was interesting to revisit through much older eyes. There's definitely a lot of the dialogue that is just so cringy. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ I'm having a watch party of the movie with my friend Claire on Instagram tomorrow at Noon CST/6pm GMT. You can join in with us or like Book Club save post and comment later.

julieclair Houseguests have resulted in limited reading time this month, so I didn‘t get to read this, but now that I‘ve heard your thoughts I‘m intrigued to see how I would feel about how it has aged. 4mo
julieclair 6️⃣ I‘m an introvert, so staying home would definitely be my choice. Cozy Christmas! 4mo
julieclair 7️⃣ I keep a gratitude journal and a one-line-a-day journal, although I haven‘t been consistent with either lately. I‘ve also started doing a collage journal, which I‘m really enjoying. 4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair Book aged so badly. Watched the movie after finishing. Movie was better. Still dated but better. 4mo

"Will you tell me how long you have loved him?"

"It has been coming on so gradually, that I hardly know when it began. But I believe I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley."

Here's a lovely pic Himself took of Chatsworth House. It was Pemberley in 2005's Pride and Prejudice movie

"Elizabeth had the satisfaction of receiving an answer to her letter as soon as she possibly could. She was no sooner in possession of it than, hurrying into the little copse, where she was least likely to be interrupted, she sat down on one of the benches and prepared to be happy; for the length of the letter convinced her that it did not contain a denial." - Chapter 52
