The Vanishing of Katharina Linden
The Vanishing of Katharina Linden: A Novel | Helen Grant
3 posts | 10 read | 3 to read
BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Helen Grant's The Glass Demon. After Pias grandmother dies in a freak accident, the neighbors in her little German hometown of Bad Mnstereifel glance at Pia with wary eyes. But then something else captures the communitys attention: the vanishing of Katharina Linden. Katharina was last seen at a parade, dressed as Snow White. Then, like a character in a Grimms fairy tale, she disappeared. Ten-year-old Pia and her only friend, the unpopular StinkStefan, suspect that Katharina has been spirited away by the supernatural. Their investigation is inspired by such local legends as that of Unshockable Hans, visited by witches in the form of cats, or of the knight whose son is doomed to hunt forever. Then another girl vanishes, and Pia is plunged into a new and unnerving place, one far away from fairy talesand perilously close to adulthood.

I can't confidently say that this is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE #firstsentence... but it's definitely up there:

"My life might have been so different, had I not been known as the girl whose grandmother exploded."

@BarbaraBB

Cinfhen Pretty awesome first line...I have this book on my Kindle TBR 7y
BarbaraBB This is strange... Read the #firstsentence that @Liz_M posted earlier today! 7y
monalyisha @BarbaraBB @Liz_M What?! Helen Grant... what a sneak (or maybe it was unintentional? Or an homage? I don't remember her crediting anyone in any sort of note, though). The Iain Banks was definitely published first (1992 vs. 2009). My world has been knocked slightly askew. (edited) 7y
