Frederick Horsman Varley was a binge drinker, womanizer, and spendthrift. He was also a charter member of Canada's most famous band of painters, the Group of Seven, and in his own right, one of Canada's finest and most inventive artists. He is best known for the landscape paintings, but his work, taken as a whole, is far from typical of the Group of Seven's output, and his tempest-tossed life gives quite a different meaning to the title of his signature painting, Stormy Weather.
