A first entry in a new series by two Grand Master Award winners is set in 1890s San Francisco and finds former Pinkerton operative Sabina Carpenter and her detective partner, ex-Secret Service agent John Quincannon, tackling two seemingly unrelated cases that are complicated by two murders and the interference of Sherlock Holmes.

I liked that this was a detective partnership featuring a woman, especially since it was set during a time when women weren't "allowed" outside the home. It did not meet my expectations. Mrs. Carpenter's partner seems to only appreciate her for her looks, overlooking her intelligence.

The narrator just spent 3(ish) minutes discussing the fact that the main heroine has a "healthy appetite" and yet never gains any weight, keeping her "slim, trim waist" even when she dares to eat a grilled bratwurst. #eyeroll

MrBook Eating a grilled bratwurst with no gain? *snorts* 8y
