The Intellectual Devotional
The Intellectual Devotional: Revive Your Mind, Complete Your Education, and Roam Confidently with the Cultured Class | David S. Kidder, Noah D. Oppenheim
8 posts | 8 read | 2 reading | 9 to read
This daily digest of intellectual challenge and learning will arouse curiosity, refresh knowledge, expand horizons, and keep the mind sharp. Millions of Americans keep bedside books of prayer and meditative reflection--collections of daily passages to stimulate spiritual thought and advancement. The Intellectual Devotional is a secular version of the same--a collection of 365 short lessons that will inspire and invigorate the reader every day of the year. Each daily digest of wisdom is drawn from one of seven fields of knowledge: history, literature, philosophy, mathematics and science, religion, fine arts, and music. Impress your friends by explaining Plato's Cave Allegory, pepper your cocktail party conversation with opera terms, and unlock the mystery of how batteries work. Daily readings range from important passages in literature to basic principles of physics, from pivotal events in history to images of famous paintings with accompanying analysis. The book's goal is to refresh knowledge we've forgotten, make new discoveries, and exercise modes of thinking that are ordinarily neglected once our school days are behind us. Offering an escape from the daily grind to contemplate higher things, The Intellectual Devotional is a great way to awaken in the morning or to revitalize one's mind before retiring in the evening.

I‘m starting to really like my daily dose of knowledge and look forward to learning something everyday! Today‘s topic was literature, yesterday it was history and got to learn a bit more about Hammurabi‘s code of Law, which I found fascinating! A great way to learn and get interested in finding out more on the subjects that appeal to you the most.

batsy This sounds really interesting! 4y
Faibka @batsy it is! I‘m really liking this book if you want to check it out, each day of the week explores a topic on seven different subjects. Tomorrow‘s theme is Visual Arts, so I‘m curious what topic it will cover 😃 It‘s a good way to start the day I think 😊 4y
batsy Yes, it does sound like a good thing to do daily. I will probably give it a go (though will have to catch up :) 4y
Faibka @batsy great! :) I think the format allows you to start wherever you want or in the day you happen to start it, it just follows each week of the year, I might have started it wrong because I just noticed I‘m already in week 2 lol! 4y

Very informative about Ulysses. I've never read it but now I have to read it for sure.

BookishMarginalia I‘ve never been able to get through it 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y

This is an interesting one, you get to learn a bit of information each day for a whole year on seven different subjects: History, Literature, Visual Arts, Science, Music, Philosophy and Religion, divided by the days of the week: Monday for History, Tuesday for Literature, and so on. All written by experts in that particular field. Might just embark on this journey of knowledge!

Faibka @GingerAntics this one might interest you :) 4y

I have really been enjoying the tagged book. I totally look forward to learning my random piece of knowledge each day. This is a portion of yesterday‘s entry. Tuesday‘s topic is always related to Literature which I love.
