Bellview school, Teton County

‘I started first grade at Bellview school in 1933...Our ranch was about five miles from school. In good weather, our Shetland pony, Eagle, pulled us to school in a little buggy. Going home was quite an experience with that pony. At the end of the school day, he was ready to go home, and we went home fast. We were always praying the buggy we sat in would make it between the gate and the post.‘

ljuliel Beautiful place ! I can‘t remember, was that the state that Ivan Doig‘s books are set in ? He made it sound like such beautiful country . Your post about the schoolhouse reminded me of his book (edited) 5y
Severnmeadows @ljuliel now you‘ve put me onto another wonderful author who I‘ve not heard of - but will read now! His This House of Sky looks really interesting. The quote I put in was from a pupil of the school in the picture. (edited) 5y
ljuliel Yes, his books were set in Montana. Some are in series , all set in the same area. I have the one you mentioned but have yet to listen to it. I have almost all of his and have liked them all, but Whistling Season and The Bartender‘s Tale have probably been my favorites so far. Great characters and lovely descriptions. Drop me a note if you read one. I‘d like to know how you get on with it. 😊 5y
Severnmeadows @ljuliel I will 😊 5y

This is the kind of book I love. Jam packed with reminiscences from local people, whose families have lived there for generations.
