This House of Sky
This House of Sky: Landscapes of a Western Mind | Ivan Doig
10 posts | 6 read | 14 to read
A haunting, magnificently written memoir by Ivan Doig about growing up in the American West Ivan Doig grew up in the rugged wilderness of western Montana among the sheepherders and denizens of small-town saloons and valley ranches. What he deciphers from his past with piercing clarity is not only a raw sense of land and how it shapes us but also of the ties to our mothers and fathers, to those who love us, and our inextricable connection to those who shaped our values in our search for intimacy, independence, love, and family. A powerfully told story, This House of Sky is at once especially American and universal in its ability to awaken a longing for an explicable past.

#bookreport

Finished This House of Sky for #montana, which I loved. More than halfway through Garp for #newhampshire, which I‘m liking, not loving. #unpopularopinion

Working my way slowly through The Romanovs - at around 55% now, but it‘s a bit of a chunkster.

Read Topics of Conversation as an ARC from #netgalley - really didn‘t like that and hated Fear and Loathing!

All in all, a bit of a mixed week!

Cinfhen Still LOADS of progress and NO BAILS 4y
squirrelbrain I don‘t often bail @Cinfhen - I need to learn how to make myself, for my own sanity sometimes! 4y
Cinfhen I love the concept of bail!! Life is too short 😛 4y

This is a beautifully written book about relationships, both human relationships and those with the land and the world around us.

Doig draws us into his hardscrabble life, growing up in #montana with his Father and Grandma and, even though you feel the hardship, his descriptive writing makes you want to experience that way of life.

Hooked_on_books You‘re cranking these out! Nice job. I‘m stalled at 5 left. I have the books picked out and staring at me in my library but I keep finding reasons to read other stuff instead. 4y
squirrelbrain What can I say @Hooked_on_books - I like a list but more than that I love ticking things off a list! 5 is not far to go though - you‘ll easily do that before the end of the year... 4y

Doig‘s memoir speaks to the formative power of family: a father, a mother, a grandmother— people who loved him and nurtured him before sending him into the wider world. It‘s also a memoir of Western Montana‘s rugged wildness and how land shaped the life story. One could polish this off in an afternoon—but more satisfactorily, one may linger between the lines, savoring prose and poetry, the clear-eyed honesty and haunting nostalgia of Doig‘s voice.

An American frontier classic, apparently. The early Montana ranch scene setting was moderately interesting to a point, then it fizzled out for me and I realized my energy was maybe best directed elsewhere.

This beautiful book makes me long for a simpler time under the wide open sky!! It is a love story about a boy and his father. The writing is poetic and lyrical. I will be reading many more of his books!
