This was a great book for those of us ( myself included) who know we struggle with our mental health sometimes, but have never made the leap to actually see a therapist. She explains the process, therapy techniques used, what different therapists are trained to help with, how the appointment might go, etc. Very informative

If you‘re thinking about finding a therapist, but are on the fence about it or have no clue where to start, this is a perfect book for that! It goes through the meanings of all the various abbreviations and other mental health jargon, ways to shop for a therapist and finding a good fit, all the various types of therapy, and what to expect. I was feeling really overwhelmed, and now feel a lot more confident after reading this book.

I have my first therapy appointment in many, many years at the end of the month, and as is my nature, I‘m really stressed about it!! Then I found out a mental health youtuber I‘m a casual fan of released a book a few months ago and it turns out it‘s just what I need right now - a book that lays everything out in an organized manner, in clear and concise layperson language so I know exactly what to expect!

WhatWouldJaneDo I hope your appointment goes well! It's so hard to get started so it's amazing you've taken that first step. 6y
mcipher I hope it goes well and you like the therapist! That‘s the hardest part, I think, finding a really good fit. 🤗 6y
hgrimes @WhatWouldJaneDo Thanks! It took me...er...6 years of internal debate to get this far? I‘m already feeling a large weight off my shoulders even though I‘m still nervous! 6y

hgrimes @mcipher So true. I made an attempt about 15 years ago and honestly was not successful. At least nowadays my insurance isn‘t limited to 6 sessions, so I can take as long as I need to find a good match (thanks, Obama!). I finally feel ready and determined to take on this challenge, but it took a ton of internal convincing! 6y
RebL I saw a therapist for the first time at age 45. She does cognitive behavioral therapy. I thought it was so hokey, and so I was annoyed when one of the techniques successfully stalled a panic attack. 6y
hgrimes @RebL 😂😂 This is my favorite success story. 6y

This would be a good book for someone wondering if they have a mental Illness. It goes through some of the differences of mental health and mental illness. It also talks about the different kinds of therapists and different therapeutic strategies. That‘s as far as I got though because it wasn‘t quite what I was looking for. Although honestly I wasn‘t looking for anything, I just love covers with text/speech bubbles!

Not sure how I‘m feeling about this book yet, but this stuck out to me. Sometimes I try to hide it from my family because they don‘t understand, my husband is the only one who understands when I‘m tired and can‘t get off the couch in the afternoons, he steps up and helps with the house and kids. I‘m so lucky to have him. #endthestigma
