I ❤️ 😍 seeing books by young authors. I especially ❤️ books that destigmatize childhood and human conditions. Imagine accepting people with mental illness and listening to their perspective instead of forcing our own. #endthestigma

Found this book during the #NAMI Basics class yesterday in a footnote and quickly downloaded it to my Kindle. I thought I knew a lot about schizophrenia, but here I am 22 pages in and whoa! The most frightening thing about this disease is actually what people think it is, not what it is. #endthestigma

mandarchy It took me a year to read this, but it's a great reference, so I'm glad I bought it. If you or a loved one is diagnosed with schizophrenia, get the latest edition. NAMI uses this to support their work, and you can read why. 1y

Tonight is my second NAMI basics class. It's a 6 week program for caregivers. If you are struggling with mental illness or dealing with a loved one who suffers, I cannot express how helpful this is. Lots of reading. #endthestigma

This book was fascinating. Lots of stories about defectology - I'm glad we call it neurodiversity today. This paragraph really hits home. I wish my son had autism instead of schizophrenia. You can talk about autism. Schizophrenia is unspeakable. There's so much to learn about the brain and its not the end of the world. #endthestigma

WJCintron Agree!! ❤ Didn't know about that book. I'll add it to my TBR. Thanks for sharing. I tagged a book I read, it's a YA book, fiction, but there are parts that are really good. You can see the point of view of the boy and what medication does, which unfortunately it's like that, they over medicate, or not medicate at all or change medication a LOT. Not fair, and that's what I like about the book. I don't know if you read it. 3y
mandarchy @WJCintron I haven't read that. I'll have to check it out. Medication is crazy. My favorite med problem is when they change the color shape or size of a med used by a paranoid schizophrenic. 🤔 really makes it hard to stay with the program. 3y
mandarchy @WJCintron wow! I just looked at it and added it to my tbr list. Looks really good. 3y
WJCintron @mandarchy It gets better as you read. LOVE that you are in his head, and get to see what he's thinking, feeling and how he reacts to medication. They made a movie. I didn't like it at ALL! lol maybe it's just me, but the book is way better. The theme of religion at first, I didn't like all the criticism, it hit a nerve, but then that stops and you see the purpose at the end. Hope you like it! 👍 😃 3y
mandarchy @WJCintron when I looked at the book profile I saw that they had made a movie, but the reviews didn't look good. 3y

I am usually not a soapbox kind of person. But everyone should read this book. Whether you have a child with special needs or not, you will laugh and cry, and hopefully understand. Sometimes having a child with a hidden disability makes me feel so alone... and judged... and crazy. But this book actually makes me feel normal for once. If I could buy a million copies and hand them out on the street, I would.

Shut Up About Your Perfect Kid!

mandarchy I just added it to my TBR list. My son has a hidden disability that is basically unmentionable. I constantly hear that he's spoiled and lazy. If people new the underlying reason, they'd maybe treat him better. But I want to protect his privacy. So I often ask people if they would treat him better if they could see it in his face, why do they need proof that he deserves better? It's hard. 4y
j.rye @mandarchy it‘s pretty similar here. Ducky is obviously adorable and looks ‘normal.‘ But he had ASD and unique challenges. I hate explaining it to people because why the f should I have to? Just stop staring, Karen! 4y
mandarchy Sometimes I laugh and sometimes I cry. My son growls at people when he thinks they are out of line. He says there is a monster inside him (his obsession is Godzilla). I work hard to #endthestigma but it's tough. I just hope my son grows confident in who he is so he can withstand the states as he gets older. 4y
j.rye @mandarchy I wish I could growl at people who were out of line too 🤷🏻‍♀️ he‘s just brave enough to do what we all want to do. 4y

This haunting memoir of mental illness and time spent in a psychiatric hospital kept me riveted and horrified. It hits a bit close to home, as I have a teenage niece struggling with mental illness and suicidal thoughts and actions. My heart just breaks for these young girls caught in the grip of their mental prisons. My only hope is that my niece's treatment is kinder than those of the late 60s shown in this book. #mentalillness #endthestigma 💔

TrishB She sounds like she has some wonderful support ♥️ wishing her well. 5y
cherinium @TrishB Thanks so much! It's been a rough year or so for the whole family. It means a lot to have support from others. 🌞 5y

Not sure how I‘m feeling about this book yet, but this stuck out to me. Sometimes I try to hide it from my family because they don‘t understand, my husband is the only one who understands when I‘m tired and can‘t get off the couch in the afternoons, he steps up and helps with the house and kids. I‘m so lucky to have him. #endthestigma

There have been many inspiring and educational passages in this book, but this one truly is important. I am of the opinion that if this message is taken to heart, a lot would change both in the broken war on drugs, and the (far from perfect) treatment system that is now in place. What is even more important is that this is supported by research and literature. #currentlyreading #nonfiction #endthestigma #harmreduction
