Bourbon Curious
Bourbon Curious: A Tasting Guide for the Savvy Drinker with Tasting Notes for Dozens of New Bourbons | Fred Minnick
1 post | 1 to read
"The world has been waiting for this book." Jeffrey Morganthaler, author of The Bar Book and Drinking Distilled In Bourbon Curious: A Tasting Guide for the Savvy Drinker, award-winning whiskey writer and Wall Street Journal best-selling author Fred Minnick creates an easy-to-read interactive tasting journey that helps you select barrel-aged bourbons based on your flavor preferences. Using the same tasting principles he offers in his Kentucky Derby Museum classes and as a judge at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Minnick cuts to the chase, dismissing brand marketing and judging only the flavor of this all-American whiskey. Bourbon Curious groups bourbon into four main flavor profilesgrain, nutmeg, caramel, and cinnamon. While many bourbons boast all four flavor notes, one delicious sensation typically overpowers the rest. This book reveals more than 50 bourbon brands' predominate tastes and suggests cocktail recipes to complement them. In addition, Minnick spends some time busting bourbon's myths; unraveling its mysteries; and exploring distiller secrets, disclosing the recipes you won't find on a bottle's label. This updated edition contains all the best new bourbons and revised tasting notes on any bourbons that have undergone a substantial change since the original edition. And like good-tasting bourbon, Bourbon Curious is approachable to all!

I don‘t know if I like bourbon yet. ?
I did get an array of minis at the store the other night.
So I have more to try.
I‘m usually more of a margarita, Piña Colada, daiquiri, sweet dessert drinks, or prosecco person. ? ?
You know, a light weight. ?

Ruthiella Thanks for the follow up! I don‘t really drink alcohol at all - a light light weight - so I was curious! 3w
ImperfectCJ I'm not a huge fan of bourbon on its own, but I like it in a Manhattan or, even better, in a drink a local bar here makes called a Harlequin Racerunner. It's two parts bourbon, one part coffee liquer (Mr. Black's is what I use), a few splashes of black walnut bitters over ice, with optional orange zest. But I've been liking an aperol spritz or a negroni lately, maybe because it's getting warmer out. (As I chime in with my unsolicited opinion...) 3w
MaleficentBookDragon @ImperfectCJ the Racerunner sounds interesting. I‘ll have to look for those bitters. I‘m going to get some vermouth to try an old fashioned. I have a well stocked bar but don‘t use it much. I take after my dad. He built a really nice bar in our basement, fully stocked it, and barely drank anything. My sister & her friends would drink stuff & then fill the bottles with water. My dad never found out. I did, when I went to use rum in a recipe.😹 3w

ImperfectCJ @MaleficentBookDragon I've never made an old fashioned with vermouth. Interesting idea for the "sweet" portion of the drink. Seems like it would end up similar to a Manhattan. My parents had a dry sink stocked with liquor they got as wedding gifts in 1972. I think my friends and I finally finished the bottles up in the late 1990s (permissive parents meant we didn't have to fill the bottles with water ?). 3w
MaleficentBookDragon @ImperfectCJ you‘re right. I was thinking of a Manhattan. I tried Woodford Reserve tonight. I liked it better than yesterday‘s. 3w
dabbe I've never tried Bourbon on its own, and my tastes for drinks are similar to yours. But in a Manhattan? Whoah, baby! 😍 3w
