'On the kibbutz it's hard to know. We're all supposed to be friends but very few really are' Ariella, unhappy in love, confides in the woman whose husband she stole. Nahum, a devoted father, can't find the words to challenge his daughter's promiscuous lover. The old idealists deplore the apathy of the young, while the young are so used to kibbutz life that they can't work out if they're impassioned or indifferent. And amid this group of people unwilling and unable to say what they mean, Martin attempts to teach Esperanto.

Martin said that imprecise words poison relations between people everywhere, and that's why clear, accurate words can heal those relationships, but only if they are the right words spoken in a language that all people can understand. Moshe Yashar said nothing, but thought that the sorrow in the world was born long before words.

This collection of linked short stories about the people on a kibbutz in the 1950s is melancholy but lovely.

My book for 'O' for #LitsyAtoZ.

There's an undeniable pessimism in many of these stories about kibbutz life--despite communal intention, life can be isolating. Oz probes the good and bad about this ideology circa 1950s in straightforward interconnected pieces. "Little Boy" still sticks--cautionary tale about the lack of empathy.
