Nothing Short of Dying
Nothing Short of Dying: A Clyde Barr Novel | Erik Storey
8 posts | 9 read | 5 to read
Hailed by bestselling writer William Kent Krueger as “the year’s best thriller debut,” this furiously paced ride into harm’s way features a drifter with lethal skills, whose mission to rescue his abducted sister pits him against a ruthless meth kingpin and his army of killers. Sixteen years. That’s how long Clyde Barr has been away from Colorado’s thick forests, alpine deserts, and craggy peaks, running from a past filled with haunting memories. But now he’s back, having roamed across three continents as a hunter, adventurer, soldier of fortune, and most recently, unjustly imprisoned convict. And once again, his past is reaching out to claim him. By the light of a flickering campfire, Clyde receives a frantic phone call from his sister Jen. No sooner has she pleaded with him to come rescue her than the line goes dead. Clyde doesn’t know how much time he has, or where Jen is located, or even who has her. All he knows is that nothing short of dying will stop him from saving her. Joining Clyde in his against-all-odds quest is a young woman named Allie whose motivations for running this gauntlet are fascinatingly complex. As the duo races against the clock, it is Allie who gets Clyde to see what he has become and what he can still be. Vivid with the hues and scents of Colorado’s backcountry, and thought-provoking in its exploration of how past, present, and future collide to test resolve, Nothing Short of Dying is, above all, a propulsive, action-driven race against the clock.

Clyde Barr is a man with a dark and rugged background. His solitary lifestyle has consisted of being a hunter and adventurer in some pretty challenging locations on the globe. Barr returns to his hometown in Colorado following an unjust incarceration. He intends to return to the wilderness for some peace. Surprisingly, Barr gets a desperate phone call from his youngest of three older sisters.

I came across this book on a list of Modern Mrs. Darcy books that involve nature survival stories. There was absolutely no part of this book that was a nature survival story. This read more like a cheesy action movie with lots of testosterone-fueled gun fights. The only thing I liked was the setting of various cities in western Colorado since I‘m a sucker for books set in places I‘ve been. Thankfully this was a library download.Just skip this one.

A fantastic debut thriller from Erik Storey that introduces Clyde Barr, ex-con, soldier, mercenary (but don't call him that), who has to save his sister from a ruthless drug dealer. Set in the Colorado mountains, Nothing Short of Dying is a violent, visual, brutal story; I'm looking forward to the sequel, A Promise to Kill.

Not bad for a debut. Set up for a sequel.

This book loses out since Underground Railroad just came in from the library, and I wasn't making much progress on it. I'm letting my mother in law read this and she can tell me what happens.

Names hidden to protect the story: "I wore myself out trying to replace the back of [x's] head with his face." All kinds of fun, this one. The CJ Box—whom I already trusted anyway—blurb is spot-on.

And . . . the last days of summer reading are drawing to a close. A stack of comics — Tales from the Darkside, Green Arrow, All-New Wolverine, She Wolf, some old and eBayed Bad Moon Rising, Wonder Woman: Earth One — an Evenson novella (this is the first one he signed, too!), and a couple novels I've been neglecting. Okay, and another novel and another collection on my device. T minus two weeks . . .

Zelma Sounds like a great plan for the end of summer. I really need to get to The Dog Stars soon! 8y
Scott_BookInvasion The Dog Stars is great! Watch out for the lack of quotations but the prose is quite elegant 8y
carys14 I absolutely loved the The Dog Stars! The Painter was also awesome. 8y

SGJ Paged through Dog Stars they other day, and: high hopes that the 'memo style' fiction-formatting pays out / is necessary. It comes highly rec'd, though, so surely it works. And surely the unquoted dialogue won't just be affectation either ... 8y
Munshun I really liked the Wonder Woman: Year One. I would've loved it even more if this story was included in the monthly series instead of a stand alone story. 8y
SGJ Yeah, Wonder Woman: Earth One was good. 8y
