Pickpick

This is an eclectic collection of essays, book and film reviews, speeches, and even fiction. Lots of memorable quotes. He states that he tries to “write as Miles Davis and Ray Charles sing and play”. He also cited his love of Henry James who described writing as “perception at the pitch of passion”. I love that!Baldwin was a Renaissance Man for sure.

This morning I‘m reading a couple of essays from this wonderful collection that so vividly evokes a certain era as well as James Baldwin himself.

50+ years later and so much of Baldwin's writing remains on point.

Written in 1961. Seems even more relevant now.

I am aiming at what Henry James called "perception at the pitch of passion."

My library haul: only one in that white male genre I'm striving to read outside of. Started the Baldwin with the essay "The Uses of the Blues". I can tell he going to teach me a lot and I'm going to value it.
