Dog Man: An Uncommon Life on a Faraway Mountain | Martha Sherrill
3 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Morie Sawataishi lives a life that is radically unconventional by any standard but almost absurd in blatantly conformist Japan. Journalist Martha Sherrill provides a profound look at what it takes to be an individualist in a culture where rebels are rare.

I LOVED reading this book. I love Akita‘s and it was a great depiction of them.

This book is a must read for serious Akita lovers. It explores more than the saving and development of the breed, this book explores the price people sometimes pay for their dog love and obsession. I found it helpful as a look into why my Japanese family and friends think I‘m nuts because of how I baby my pets. There is a serious cultural difference in how dogs are treated, but love comes across in many forms. A fast read and informative. 4/5 ⭐️s

I gobbled this book up in two days. If you have interest in dog breeding or genetics, or just human/dog interaction, this one is for you. The story of a Japanese family who brought the Akita breed back from possible extinction. A treasure found in the used book store.
