Czech Cookery
Czech Cookery | Lea Filipová
1 post
Enticingly fragrant pork baked with stewed sauerkraut and dumplings, fillet of beef in cream sauce garnished with lemon and cranberries, roast goose, pheasant with bacon, Prague ham with creamed horseradish, pancakes with bilberry sauce, strawberry dumplings made of fermented dough and sprinkled with grated white cheese, baked yeast dumplings with poppy-seed and cream cheese fillings, or Christmas cake with raisins and almonds...These are the classics that have made Czech cuisine famous. This recipe book, with its easy-to-follow instructions, plenty of tips and variations on basic recipes, and color photographs of important steps in the preparation and presentation of the dishes, will certainly tempt you into cooking something mouthwatering for your family or friends.

@ValerieAndBooks and I have been talking about Ukrainian cooking and recipes since our buddy read. I plan to make some traditional stuffed cabbage next weekend. Today, however, I made a decidedly non traditional chicken Kiev-baked, not fried, with the herb butter as a sauce with some wine rather than as a stuffing. The accompaniment was traditional Czech cabbage from one of these two books that I got while living in Prague. Left is tagged.

Crazeedi How funny, I'm just about to make halupki and halushki from my garden cabbage!! 5y
Crazeedi I've also done cabbage in the crock w sausage onions, tomatoes etc, its yummy 5y
Lindy Yum! It‘s cabbage time. The ones I‘ve bought at market recently have been really sweet. 5y

Lynnsoprano @Crazeedi My mother-in-law made both all the time! My kids Love halupki, and I‘m going to make some next weekend. The Ukrainian side of hubby‘s family called them galuptsi. There used to be a Ukranian Orthodox Church nearby that would cook all the traditional foods one weekend a month, and we would take the kids there for Saturday lunch. The people were always surprised to see kids who wanted seconds 😄 5y
Lynnsoprano @lindy I‘m lucky that my family loves cabbage. I was trying to convince myself that it‘s fall by cooking it, even though we‘re still in the upper 80‘s. 5y
Lindy @Lynnsoprano We‘ve had frost here at night, and a bit of snow too. 5y
Lynnsoprano @Lindy That sounds wonderful to me right now. We‘re going to Pennsylvania in two weeks, hoping to experience some cooler weather and fall colors. 5y
Lindy @Lynnsoprano ðŸðŸ˜Š 5y
Crazeedi @Lynnsoprano each country says it a bit differently! And you're coming to PA? Yay!! The colors aren't great yet, no frost, been too warm, but supposed to get colder by the weekend! East PA or west PA? 5y
Lynnsoprano @crazeedi Central, actually. We‘re getting together with a group of Ken‘s HS friends in Lancaster for three days, then spending a night with his sister near Reading. No time to travel around and visit, unfortunately. 5y
ValerieAndBooks Perfect fall food, that‘s for sure! I‘m going to make my dish probably tomorrow but have to go buy almonds first 😊 5y
Crazeedi @Lynnsoprano sounds like fun! Safe travels to you! 5y
