A Riveting Cold-Case Mystery from Dee Henderson Evie Blackwell loves her life as an Illinois State Police detective . . . mostly. She's very skilled at investigations and has steadily moved up through the ranks. She would like to find Mr. Right, but she has a hard time imagining how marriage could work, considering the demands of her job. Gabriel Thane is a lifetime resident of Carin County and now its sheriff, a job he loves. Gabe is committed to upholding the law and cares deeply for the residents he's sworn to protect. He too would like to find a lifetime companion, a marriage like his parents have. When Evie arrives in Carin, Illinois, it's to help launch a new task force dedicated to reexamining unsolved crimes across the state. Spearheading this trial run, Evie will work with the sheriff's department on a couple of its most troubling missing-persons cases. As she reexamines old evidence to pull out a few tenuous new leads, she unearths a surprising connection . . . possibly to a third cold case. Evie's determined to solve the cases before she leaves Carin County, and Sheriff Thane, along with his family, will be key to those answers.

Loved this book. I felt like I was in it while I was reading it. The book was unique in that, while still fiction, it focused on fictional cold cases instead of cases that were recently being investigated. The characters were likable and relatable. I am looking forward to reading the whole series!

If you're looking for suspense this is not it. I typically enjoy Dee Henderson. this one was just okay. It was slow and could have used a lot more editing to take out a lot of unneeded words.

It sounded like a good mystery about missing persons, with a strong female lead and interesting characters. But it just didn‘t work. The characters were annoying, but not interesting. No one ever seemed to do anything but talk. After pages of dialogue, wondered how they‘d solve a case since no one seemed to be working it. Decided to move on.

This book was overly long for what it was. I found the conversations repetitive and excessive.

Dee Henderson is near the top of my favorite authors list. I love how she uses a main character from a former series to introduce you to the main character in a new series. Great descriptions, Christian characters that live their faith w/o shoving it down people's throats and a crime to be solved had me staying up way too late to finish this one. {Sasha feels no guilt at taking my computer chair.}

kdwinchester I saw the cat and thought, that looks like Sasha. Oh, it is! 😂 8y

Reading two of these in 48 hours qualifies me for a bookish hangover. Also I wanted more after finishing this one. Hopefully, judging by the subtitle, there will be more. *fingers crossed*

Another book I added to my Kindle on vacation. I have read several of Henderson's books and liked them. Hopeful this will be another good read.
