7 posts | 15 read | 12 to read
In her unique, generous, and affecting voice, nineteen-year-old Katie Hill shares her personal journey of undergoing gender reassignment.Have you ever worried that youd never be able to live up to your parents expectations? Have you ever imagined that life would be better if you were just invisible? Have you ever thought you would do anythinganythingto make the teasing stop? Katie Hill had and it nearly tore her apart. Katie never felt comfortable in her own skin. She realized very young that a serious mistake had been made; she was a girl who had been born in the body of a boy. Suffocating under her peers bullying and the mounting pressure to be normal, Katie tried to take her life at the age of eight years old. After several other failed attempts, she finally understood that Katiethe girl trapped within herwas determined to live. In this first-person account, Katie reflects on her pain-filled childhood and the events leading up to the life-changing decision to undergo gender reassignment as a teenager. She reveals the unique challenges she faced while unlearning how to be a boy and shares what it was like to navigate the dating world and experience heartbreak for the first time in a body that matched her gender identity. Told in an unwaveringly honest voice, Rethinking Normal is a coming-of-age story about transcending physical appearances and redefining the parameters of normalcy to embody ones true self.

Katie Rain Hill is trans and here has laid out her experiences growing up trans with all the highs and lows included. The scene where she discovers the word transgender and is able to read about others who are like her is marvelous. This is definitely YA, but I think that‘s great for the visibility and accessibility it gives her story.

The tone was a little too YA for my taste, but this was an enlightening glimpse into what it's like to discover you're trans and embrace your true self. I like that she addressed the problematic acceptance of some trans people more than others because they "pass," fit in with societal beauty standards, are straight, fit neatly into the gender binary, etc. I'd love to read more about that, but perhaps that's not her book to write. #TransBooks

Okay I just wanted to tell you all what I cried about specifically okay 1) I cried when she described hating herself and trying to kill herself when she was a child 2) when she finally told her mom that she was trans and her mom was like "give me a list of what you want to change and I will find a way to get everything for you" SOBBED 3) when an anonymous donor saw her advocacy and paid for her entire operation AND for her to go to college

I cried no less than 6 times reading this memoir by a trans girl growing up in Bible Belt Oklahoma. Omg. Read it in one afternoon. #transbooks #queerbooks #overthis (I was going to post a photo of the book but Litsy's new update left out the blur option [or I just can't find it] so I'm not posting any photos of library books bcz I don't want to post photos with the address stickers libraries put on their books. Not impressed with the update lmao)

JessReads I was bummed to see that feature gone, too! I found the old editor as a free app - Photo Editor by Axiem Systems (should be result 2-ish when you search for a photo editor on the App Store if you're on an Apple device). You can edit on your phone and post that way, if you're interested! 7y
Lindy Have you tried playing with the linear capability in Focus edit? 7y
