Eleven-year-old Zomorod has moved four times in her short life, starting with her family's move from Iran to America. Starting over yet again and now entering middle school, Zomorod decides to go by "Cindy" to make the new girl transition a bit easier. She does make some friends despite having to sidestep ignorant questions about camels and other perceived notions of her culture; and that's only if people realize she and her family aren't Mexican.

aLmYbNeNr But then Iran starts making the news. There's a revolution happening and then a group of American are held hostage. Cindy and her family become targets of racism and prejudice. How can she balance Iranian and American culture along with middle school and all of the hate? 7y
aLmYbNeNr Set in late 1970s America during the Iranian Revolution and crisis, the content of this semi-autobiographical novel is relevant today. Themes include new kid worries and friendships, family issues, and identity. Suggested for fans of Lucky Broken Girl and Blackbird Fly. 7y

We did a mini genre project at work over the past few months. My genre was multicultural books and due in June. I'll be sharing a few of the books here. Below is my annotation:

Fourth grader Mateo Martinez is living through a bit of a rough patch. His best friend used to be Johnny Ramirez, but Johnny doesn't hang out with him anymore. Mateo starts hanging out with Ashwin, who shares his values of bravery, loyalty, and honor.

aLmYbNeNr In fact, the two often pretend to be medieval knights and their bikes are their trusty steeds.

But...pretending to be a knight gets Mateo into trouble. Strike two. Then, one night Mateo's old trike that was handed down to his little sister goes missing. His parents think he's hiding it from Mila, so he enlists Ashwin to help catch the thieves.
7y
aLmYbNeNr Of course, Mila insists on tagging along. To Mateo's immense surprise, it turns out that skunks stole Mila's trike and...they talk? 7y
aLmYbNeNr The title character's Mexican American culture is there but not heavily focused on. Expect strong themes of bullying, friendship, and sibling relationships. Recommended for reluctant readers, as well as fans of adventure and anthropomorphic characters. Suggest to young readers interested in Rick Riordan's books but who aren't quite ready for them yet.#themidnightwarofmateomartinez #robinyardi #booksandflowers #booksandfood 7y

Lucky Broken Girl | Ruth Behar
post image

We did a mini genre project at work over the past few months. My genre was multicultural books and due in June. I'll be sharing a few of the books here. Below is my annotation:

Ten-year-old Cuban-Jewish Ruthie Mizrahi has recently emigrated from Cuba to Queens, NY with her family. She's smart, but she doesn't feel so smart at her new school where she's held back because her English isn't good.

aLmYbNeNr But it isn't long before her English improves enough for her to move into the regular class and she even gains the reputation of a hopscotch queen. Everything is looking up until Ruthie's involved in a serious car accident and winds up in a full body cast unable to move or take care of herself. 7y
aLmYbNeNr Set in the 1960s, Lucky Broken Girl is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age novel in which Ruthie questions mortality. Taken at face value, this may sound dreary, but Ruthie's questioning leads to humor and looking on the bright side as she interacts with a truly diverse cast of characters. Themes include the immigrant experience and resilience. Suggested for readers who enjoy Rita Williams-Garcia. 7y

"What's wrong with that?" I say, running my hands through my own shortish hair and looking at Ben's and Dad's ponytails. "Boys and girls should look however they want!"

I'm #currentlyreading Star-Crossed (for real this time!) and if I finish, I'll read the sixth Lola Levine book. That's right, pubs start preparing for Halloween and Thanksgiving now. Soon we'll be seeing winter holiday books on our new books cart.

Anyway, I need to get my borrower count down (hopefully). Read these library books, take pictures, and return them!

I hope everyone is having a good day!

What's your current read?

Dreadnought is on my TBR. I'm still working through Star-Crossed. By that, I mean even though it's been listed as my current read all week, I actually haven't started it.

Instead, I read the first four Lola Levine books since I had started with the fifth. I also read about half of Giant Days, Volume 3. I need to return books to the library so I'm going with some guaranteed quick reads.

Powerful, gritty, haunting. The story is told in the points-of-view of Ramy, a university student struggling to reconcile his sexuality with his religion and Ammar, a sheikh at Ramy's mosque, who's torn between strict interpretations of the Quran and helping a member of the community.

Recommended to anyone interested in a fictionalization view of what it means to be gay and Muslim in a Muslim majority country. Includes suicide, homicide, and sex.

Happy Labor Day!

It's true...I haven't read ANY of the Game of Thrones books. As for Sarah J. Maas' series, I've only read Throne of Glass. I loved it; it's just I have a bad habit keeping up with series. I think I read it when it was the only book out. Then I had to wait and read other books.

Bette 💭 I try to finish series, but it grows exponentially, while you are waiting for the next one, others come out, and on and on. Sometimes it just isn't possible. 😟 good problem (so much to read) I guess. 😊 8y
aLmYbNeNr Too true. At least it's a good problem to have! @bette 8y
Zelma I am really weird in that I typically don't continue or finish a series. If it's fantastic, I read more. However, more often than not, I will read the first book and find that is enough. I am so finicky about committing to a series or even trilogies. Yes, I'm an odd duck. 😋 8y
See All 6 Comments
Bette @Zelma I do that as well, read one, know enough to recommend the series or not and move on. If new books would just not come out for a while and give me time to catch up with them all! 😋📚📚 8y
Zelma @Bette good to know I'm not the only one! However, even if I like title, I may find it enough in that world or with those characters. I don't find a compulsion or interest in continuing most series. 8y
aLmYbNeNr I'm the opposite. If I really like it, I want more. It's just that I get distracted while waiting and that's the main reason for not continuing. @Zelma @Bette 8y

I love the #Outlander books and tv show. I'm all caught up on both. Luckily I have these #library books for my second prompt today. One day I'll have to buy a set of these books for show (they're to large to hold and read!) but for now I'll satisfy myself with the audio. Davina Porter narrates the audio versions and she's fabulous. Have you listened to any of Diana Gabaldon's books?
📱📗
#fallthebooks: #largebooks

Blair_Reads I was considering getting them on audio but wanted an opinion of it first. Esp bc they are like 30+ hours long a good narrator is a must! I've read Outlander and have started Dragonfly. Love me some Jamie!! 💜💜 8y
swishandflick LOVE Outlander! I own all of the smaller paperbacks and they're not too big. You're right though, those hardcovers are brutal. One of my co-workers is working her way through the audiobooks (she's up to Drums of Autumn) and she loves them, she just said it just took her a little bit to get used to since Claire/Jamie start out younger and the narrator has an older voice. 8y
Zelma I love this series and the characters. So much fun and adventure and romance. Historical fiction is my jam so these are right up my alley. However, I stopped Echo in the Bone halfway through and felt like I was done with the he series. I couldn't get into some of the storylines and characters (Willie, and I only like John Gray as a supporting character) and I'm ok saying goodbye to it. 8y
See All 8 Comments
aLmYbNeNr @Blair_Reads Let me know what you think if you switch to the audio! 8y
aLmYbNeNr @swishandflick Yes, the paperbacks are better! It's funny, I only just realized yesterday that the narrator is older. I had never looked her up. But because of that, I didn't have to get used to get voice. I'm probably not great at voices, but she didn't sound older to me. I wonder if I'll hear it differently now? 8y
aLmYbNeNr @Zelma It does take some getting used to the further in you get with all of those storylines and timelines, for sure! 8y
Zelma @aLmYbNeNr I was bored to tears in the middle of Echo and Outlander should not be boring. I quit after reading 500 pages and never looked back. 8y
aLmYbNeNr @Zelma Whoa! 500 is a long way to go before bailing. Although, I understand. I only recently began to give myself permission to bail and even then it's hard for me to bail when I'm less than halfway through. 8y

aLmYbNeNr Yes, yes, and yes! And putting them on paperbacks is especially wonky. @Zelma @kmdartist @brendanmleonard 8y

Day 28 of 31: Favorite Retelling. You all will learn that favorites are hard for me! There are too many (not a problem at all) good books and authors so I can't choose one. Here are a few #retellings I love: Juliet Immortal and Romeo Redeemed by Stacey Jay, Cinder by Marissa Meyer, A Breath of Eyre by Eve Marie Mont, Jane by April Lindner, and Re Jane by Patricia Park.
📖
You do see the theme, though, right?

One of three #books I'm #currentlyreading is Dear Fang, With Love by Rufi Thorpe. I feel this particular passage, from Vera's journal, is very powerful. It resonated with me.

Also #currentlyreading. I read Attachments awhile back and really liked it. I borrowed Eleanor & Park from my #library via #Overdrive and I'm listening to it. Really good so far!

Blair_Reads I love this audio so much!!!! 8y
