As for Me and My House
As for Me and My House | Sinclair Ross
6 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
Its an immense night out there, wheeling and windy. The lights on the street and in the houses against the black wetness, little unilluminating glints that might be painted on it. The town seems huddled together, cowering on a high tiny perch, afraid to move lest it topple into the wind. The town is Horizon, the setting of Sinclair Ross brilliant classic study of life in the Depression era. Hailed by critics as one of Canadas great novels, As For Me and My House takes the form of a journal. The unnamed diarist, one of the most complex and arresting characters in contemporary fiction, explores the bittersweet nature of human relationships, of the unspoken bonds that tie people together, and the undercurrents of feeling that often tear them apart. Her chronicle creates an intense atmosphere, rich with observed detail and natural imagery. As For Me and My House is a landmark work. It is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand the scope and power of the Canadian novel. From the Paperback edition.

Thanks for the tag @Lindy :)

2️⃣ Tough one, but today I‘ll say Gabrielle Roy
3️⃣ This is also a tough one. Hot dogs cooked over a fire after a day enjoying the lake. (The lake is in Canada, so it‘s Canadian haha)

My choices are definitely more of the classic variety. Need to read some new CanLit soon.

@KVanRead

KVanRead Thanks for playing!! ❤️ your choices. Could really go for a lake, a fire, and a hotdog right now😋 4y

Next up for #7booksin7days is a #CanLit classic by Sinclair Ross.

I always think of CanLit as being incredibly dour and bleak. This book is both of those things but it somehow transcends them to become a beautiful, sad story about people frustrated by their circumstances and struggling to connect.

Panpan

Re-reading it 3 decades later, the novel‘s near-Gothic over-the-topness put me off. A desperately unhappy preacher and his miserable wife crap all over each other and—heaven forbid—are actually allowed near children. And the town‘s buildings have evil false fronts, evil I tell you; the manse is a cramped, leaky prison; the wind and rain are also evil; those false fronts and that prison and the wind and the rain and those false—just shoot me now!

LeahBergen Whaaaat? You actually influenced my purchase of this one! 😆😆 6y
LeeRHarry You really are having a bad run aren‘t you? 😏 Hope you next pick is a pick! 😊 6y

DaveNeufeld So happy that somebody mentioned Sinclair Ross, I was sad that I couldn't find him when I scoured my bookshelves today. The Lamp at Noon is a story that will stick with me forever... Thanks! 8y
