Barometer Rising
Barometer Rising | Hugh MacLennan
7 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
Penelope Wain believes that her lover, Neil Macrae, has been killed while serving overseas under her father. That he died apparently in disgrace does not alter her love for him, even though her father is insistent on his guilt. What neither Penelope or her father knows is that Neil is not dead, but has returned to Halifax to clear his name. Hugh MacLennans first novel is a compelling romance set against the horrors of wartime and the catastrophic Halifax Explosion of December 6, 1917. From the Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

The book only follows just over one week. It took longer than I liked to get to the explosion. Leading up to it wasn‘t nearly as interesting as the explosion itself and the aftermath, but not long after, it concluded mostly with their regular lives again. If there had been more focus on the disaster, I would have enjoyed it more, I‘m sure. There was an afterword by another “classic” Canadian author, Alistair Macleod.

Currently reading...a novel that takes place in Halifax during the Great War in Europe and includes the disastrous explosion in Halifax Harbour. It is well written and very interesting from a historical perspective. 👍

Pickpick

Good story! Halifax was as much a character in it too. #HalifaxExplosion

drokka I read this in elementary school (won't mention how long ago that was) and it is probably a huge contributor to my interest about those affected by war, including non-combatants. I think that up until then, my view was that only soldiers could die. My 12/13 year-old self was forever changed. 6y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @drokka i never learned any of this in grade or high school! What a shame! 😔 6y
