Revenge of the Red Club
Revenge of the Red Club | Kim Harrington

A tween reporter discovers an important and beloved club at school is being shut downand uses the power of the pen to try and activate some much-needed social change in this period-positive and empowering middle grade novel about the importance of standing up for what you believe in. Riley Dunne loves being a member of the Red Club. Its more than a group of girls supporting each other through Aunt Flos ups and downs; its a Hawking Middle School tradition. The clubs secret locker has an emergency stash of supplies, and the girls are always willing to lend an ear, a shoulder, or an old pair of sweatpants. But when the school administration shuts the Red Club down because of complaints, the girls are stunned. Who would do that to them? The girls shock quickly turns into anger, and then they decide to get even. But wallpapering the gym with maxi pads and making tampon crafts in art class wont bring their club back. Only Riley can do that. Using the skills she has cultivated as her school papers top investigative reporter (okay, only investigative reporter), she digs for the truth about who shut the club down and why. All the while dealing with friendship drama, a new and ridiculous dress code, and a support group that is now more focused on fighting with each other than fighting back. Can she save the Red Club before this rebellion turns into a full-scale war?

The cover for this one is amazing. I liked the plot (though there were some subjects that deserved more time) and the characters. Though, I don‘t know a single 8th grader who talks like this book said they talked, not since 4th grade at least. Another thing is that middle schoolers are a lot more mature than a lot of authors give them credit for. That just bugs me some times. But still, I‘m a sucker for any “disassemble the patriarchy” books. 4⭐️

This is a new favorite! Riley loves her school‘s “Red Club”. Girls meet once a week to talk about their periods and share advice. They also have a secret locker stashed with extra pants, pads, tampons, etc. Various parent complaints stack up, leading to the suspension of the school newspaper, strictly enforced dress codes for girls, and an end to the Red Club. The girls at Hawking Middle School start organizing.⬇️

MandaMT This is an awesome story about girls standing up for themselves and supporting one another. Highly recommend for middle school classroom libraries. 3y

So good! #huggable

There was some predictability but the rest makes up for it. Riley is an awesome kid and everyone involved in the Red Club is equally cool — despite their differences. The budding relationship was fun to watch develop.

I want my daughter and all her friends to read this.

I‘ve been away for a little while. My partner has been sick, and I‘ve picked up some freelance work. But this showed up in the Shelf Awareness email from my local indie this morning, and it sounded good. So I‘m starting it tonight.
