“There was something so wrong about war, something so horrific and soul-destroying that she hadn't ever contemplated, until now, as the senseless loss of life crushed her. On one side you were crippled by it; on the other side you were the perpetrator of it. There were no winners”
― Suzanne Kelman, A View Across the Rooftops
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A View Across the Rooftops is a beautiful story of quiet resistance set in Nazi occupied Amsterdam. What sets this book apart in a crowded field is how multifaceted it is. You will witness the experiences of a Jewish man in hiding, his Gentile lover desperately holding on to hope, a Nazi sympathizer emboldened by delusions of grandeur, and a couple of people caught somewhere in the middle doing what they can, when they can.
Q: What do you do when you stand in line at the UPS Store?
me: I read A View Across The Rooftops by Suzanne Kelman. It‘s better than mindless robotic marching my way to the front.
