This book!!!
I cried at the end, not because of sadness, but because of my daughter.
Haven Genevieve is my Emma. She is imaginative, and caring, and fun. She is name (Genevieve) after my Memaw. Memaw is my Gram. Anyone who knows her will say you cannot meet Memaw without feeling genuine love.
I bought this book as a possible Christmas gift for a niece, but have decided to save it for when Haven has a bad day.

I think I missed G last week, which makes me sad, but the author I was so eager to do for G works for H, too, so I suppose I‘ll survive.

I am undeniably grateful that the owner of The Dog Eared Book sang this book‘s praises, as it hadn‘t been on my radar and since it‘s middle grade, I may have foolishly never given it a second glance. Now I want to give a copy to every person I love so they can feel it wrap its loving arms around them, just as it did for me. Don‘t pass this one by. It‘s a beautiful story.

LiteraryinLawrence What is it about? I love a good middle grade book. 4y

“You always said there was truth in every story, but after you died, all I could see were lies.”

“Oh? What kind of lies?”

“Like how those stories always have happy endings.”

“And you don‘t believe in those anymore?”

“I don‘t not believe in them,” I say, thinking. “But I don‘t think they‘re the truest part of fairy tales. I think they‘re just the part people remember.”

abookishbutterfly Gram‘s smile deepens. “Go on.”

“The true part is that there‘s always a battle... I don‘t think you can know how your story ends, but the ending is always better if you‘re willing to fight for it.”

“The battles we fight always change us. When we‘re fighting them, all we can see is how they wound us. But they can change us for the better, too.”

“There‘s no point in worrying about things you can‘t change,” Gram‘s voice chides, “And you can‘t change what people think of you.”

But this time, Gram‘s words sound hollow to me. Maybe you can‘t change what people think of you, but sometimes what people think changes you, whether you want it to or not.

I know that‘s not the most encouraging passage but I find far more comfort in realistic truths and honest confessions than cold clichés and platitudes.

“I asked her for advice about writing. ‘Write about what‘s in your heart. About something that‘s important to you.‘ And maybe she‘s right. Maybe instead of trying to escape from the darkness I feel inside of me, I can write about it. I can write it out of me.”

“People are always afraid of things they don‘t understand, darlin‘,” said Gram. “Being afraid is easy. It‘s understanding that takes work.”
