In the summer of 1976, ten-year-old Eli Book's excitement over Bicentennial celebrations is tempered by his father's flashbacks to the Vietnam War and other family problems, as well as concern about his tough but troubled best friend, Edie.

“But there‘s not a tree in the world like the ones you grow up with. You never forget them, and the trees remember you.”
“And I also saw that a person never does know know anything, really, until they have lost someone they love completely.”
This isn‘t my favorite Silas House book, but as always, he writes beautifully of nature and hits the emotions. The story of a 10 year-old boy and his family. Father with PTSD from Vietnam. 👇

Scochrane26 Sister is rebelling, his aunt comes home with health issues. Eli observes everything & is trying to navigate growing up & his worries. Trees play a big part in the story. 🌳🌲I‘ve now read all of House‘s books (6), so I‘ll have to wait for his next one. I know he‘s written it but unsure when it will be published. 5y
Scochrane26 I forgot—the bookmark is from @Butterfinger & fits well with the nature theme. Thanks! 5y

“Years later I would realize that this was one of the world‘s great problems, that people often allow themselves not to think. The choose to not think, and that‘s how the whole world gets into trouble. My only excuse that day was that I was a child.”

I like the idea of #recommendsday. I read this back in 2009 and Eli so completely set up camp in my heart that I still find myself thinking about him. A five star book for me.
