From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series comes a thrilling novel featuring LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his German shepherd, Maggie. Nine months ago, a shocking assault by unidentified men killed Scott James' partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for dutyuntil he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. A German shepherd who survived two tours in Afghanistan sniffing explosives before losing her handler, her PTSD is as bad as Scotts. They are each others last chance. And theyre about to investigate the one case no one wants them to touch: identifying the men who murdered Stephanie. But what they find could ultimately break them both. One of Booklist's 10 Best Crime Fiction Books of the Year From the Paperback edition.

Great book! A wounded police officer and a combat vet dog. Both wounded, haunted by the past, and still wanting to work. Interesting crime/mystery, great character development and I loved how Maggie the dog was portrayed.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I loved that it was the origin story for a K-9 and police officer pair, and I absolutely loved how Maggie and Scott bonded and helped each other heal from trauma. I found the story line itself to be a bit tedious. I can't pinpoint anything wrong with Crais's writing, but I'm not sure I'm interested in picking up more of his work. There's nothing to make it stand out in a crowded field of police thrillers.

TracyReadsBooks I‘m a huge fan of Crais‘ Elvis Cole & Joe Pike series which is what he‘s best known for—if you haven‘t read The Monkey‘s Raincoat (first book) I recommend taking a look before you completely give up on Crais. The series has great characters (I absolutely love Joe Pike), a strong sense of place (love how he writes about LA) & is always entertaining. So good! Of course, if you‘ve read it & didn‘t like it, please ignore my fangirling! 🤣 5y
DGRachel @TracyReadsBooks Oh no, fangirl away! I‘m willing to be talked into giving other works of his a chance. This was my first by him and I was underwhelmed. I‘ll look for The Monkey‘s Raincoat. 😊 5y
TracyReadsBooks 🤞you like it a little better than Suspect. If nothing else, you will get to meet Joe Pike and that‘s a fabulous thing! 5y

I listened to the audio and never lost interest. I loved Maggie and the story was good. I thought about upping the rating, just for Maggie, but I kept it to a respectable 3.5 stars (good). There is another in this series that I will plan to read

Working on finishing this today. 70% through and enjoying it. Too bad there's only two books in the series. 😭
