I got my Cather fix between #Catherbuddyread selections with this collection of short stories and essays. The bulk of the book was stories - and they are wonderful Cather prose - but my favorite part was the essays. She could be really funny even as she eviscerated an author, and she gave praise freely where it was due. Highly recommended.

Cather is writing about Poe in this essay, but it could be her own prose she‘s describing. (Well, maybe not the disgust.) #catherbuddyread @Graywacke

Graywacke 🙂 Beautiful description. !! 5y
Graywacke And we‘re on the same wavelength 5y
Lcsmcat @Graywacke She could be harsh, too. She said of Whitman “He was the poet of the dung hill as well as of the mountains, which is admirable in theory but excruciating in verse.” Which I tend to agree with myself. 😀 5y

jewright I love this sentence! Reading about what famous authors thought of other famous authors is fascinating. 5y
Lcsmcat @jewright I do Too! I found this volume for free on Kindle. The first 75% is short stories, which I enjoyed, but I‘m LOVING these essays. 5y
Graywacke @jewright yes, it fascinating @Lcsmcat cool about this volume. 5y
batsy I love the description that comes after, "he wrote of the splendor of dream palaces... " about how he was trying to transform the very space he was in with his art. So lovely. 5y
