She's broken. She's vulnerable. She's just what Marco was looking for. Stella Wiseman was a child TV star, but there's nothing glamorous about her life now. Alone in her thirties, she's lost her parents and her friends and she's stuck in a dead-end job. But just as she hits rock bottom she meets Marco, a charismatic older man who offers to get her back on her feet. He seems too good to be true. Is he? She appreciates the money he lavishes on her. And the pills. But are the pills just helping her sleep, or helping her avoid her problems? With Stella's life still in freefall, Marco whisks her away to a secluded cottage where she is isolated from everyone except him. But the closer he pulls her, the worse she gets. He tells her it's all in her head, and she just needs time away from the world. No longer sure what's real and what's not, Stella begins to question whether she was wrong to trust Marco. Was she wrong to trust herself? Is the one person she thought was fighting for her survival actually her biggest threat?

Mehso-so

This was a typical thriller with few twists, but was entertaining. I needed something like this that wasn‘t too heavy, but not too light. It was tough connecting with the character at first bc of the choppiness of the scenes. Late in the book there were some odd narrative choices made that were eventually dropped. I enjoyed it, though, and it got my heart beating every time I heard a bump in the house.

TW: gaslighting, physical & emotional abuse.

The plot is fairly interesting, if typical of the thriller genre. I found the main character to be hopelessly naive. Too much so. 3⭐️

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Amazon Publishing UK, for the opportunity to read an a ARC. #NetGalley

LoverOfLearning Good for you for giving a trigger warning. I appreciate that. 4y
OutsmartYourShelf @LoverOfLearning Thanks 😊 I try to warn of sensitive topics as I prefer being forewarned of stuff like animal abuse in books. 4y
LoverOfLearning I absolutely agree 4y

I wasn‘t terribly delighted with the #AmazonFirstReads choices this month but decided to go with this one. There are two reviews on Amazon and Goodreads and they aren‘t great, but the storyline sounds fascinating. Anyone else struggling with picks this month?

Tamra I am passing them up. 😐 None were appealing. 4y
BlameJennyJane I‘ve done that before too. I‘m not sure I‘ll read this one anytime soon. 4y
Airykah13 I usually wait until mid-month to see what the ratings are and then I decide. None jumped out at me this month. 4y

jdiehr I was all excited to see the choices this morning and didn't end up with anything. Leaning toward the memoir... 4y
squirrelbrain Yes, I struggled too.... 4y
Literary_Siren Easy choice for me! I picked Jeff Wheeler. Fantasy is always a good choice! 4y
