Pompeii | Frank Santoro
2 posts | 1 read
* Frank Santoro's graphic novel takes place just before the eruption of Pompeii in the year 79 AD. The story follows Marcus, a young expat artist from Paestum who works as an assistant in Pompeii to Flavius, a seemingly well-regarded painter. Aside from mixing paint, Marcus is entangled in the older artist's romantic deceptions, while stuck figuring out his own. Santoro has constructed a historical fiction that is rooted in emotional truths and structured around classical principles of composition.

Pickpick

Marcus is assistant to a master artist in Pompeii but finds himself uncomfortably complicit with the older man‘s romantic subterfuge with women. And Marcus has domestic troubles of his own. All this is in 79 AD, the year Vesuvius will erupt. An intimate, emotionally-engaging #graphicnovel, reminiscent of a sketchbook, with gestural art in reddish umber plus handlettered text that looks quickly done. The story‘s question: what is art‘s importance?

The artwork in this is very loose—often scribbly—and suits the story, which portrays promising young lives cut short by the eruption of Vesuvius.
