Marcus is assistant to a master artist in Pompeii but finds himself uncomfortably complicit with the older man‘s romantic subterfuge with women. And Marcus has domestic troubles of his own. All this is in 79 AD, the year Vesuvius will erupt. An intimate, emotionally-engaging #graphicnovel, reminiscent of a sketchbook, with gestural art in reddish umber plus handlettered text that looks quickly done. The story‘s question: what is art‘s importance?

The artwork in this is very loose—often scribbly—and suits the story, which portrays promising young lives cut short by the eruption of Vesuvius.
