Pickpick

Robin Hemley takes a look at nationhood, patriotism and identity, largely by visiting enclaves/exclaves - bits of countries separated from the ‘motherland‘ by history, geography, lines drawn on maps that don‘t quite make sense, or shifting borders.

The personal writing, conversational style and geographical geekery in itself make this a fascinating read. 👇

rockpools However, it goes beyond lines-on-maps to consider what it is a person is really attached to when they say they love their country. I may not agree with everything he puts forward, but I found this interesting and thought-provoking. Thanks to NetGalley and University of Nebraska Press for the ARC (edited) 4y
rockpools This is my #SomethingAboutImmigration for #NonFiction2020 as it contains interviews with refugees and discussion with migrants about the national identity they feel. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa (edited) 4y
Nute You got me at “geographical geekery!”🤗 4y
rockpools @Nute 🤣🤣 I‘m totally planning a trip to the Netherlands/Belgium border (see my last post for this one!). There is more serious stuff in it too 😉 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds really good! 4y

Baarle-Hertog, Belgium & Baarle-Nassau, Netherlands have kind of a complicated border situation going on ⬆️. Yes, those are bits of the Netherlands inside bits of Belgium, fully inside the Netherlands, not far from the main Belgian border. These days it‘s great for tourism. Backalong, & in other messed-up border situations around the world, it‘s life & death.

Hemley‘s writing on enclaves & exclaves is readable & quite fascinating. #Netgalley

Hooked_on_books This is fascinating! Great map. 4y
rockpools @Hooked_on_books It‘s really fascinating. Sent me scurrying all over the place for more maps! 4y

Uh oh. I didn‘t actually expect to get a #Netgalley approval on this one - my rating was over 70% for all of 2 hours there 😬. I will officially never reach 80%.

Still, it looks fascinating! Robin Hemley travels to places where borders mean everything and nothing, where ‘nationhood‘ is, if not disputed, then comes with an element of question or confusion.
