Shotgun | Ed McBain
2 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
From Mystery Grand Master Ed McBain comes this classic tale from the 87th Precinct. The cops are horrified at the ghastly shotgun slaying of a couple, thinly disguised as a murder/suicide. Detectives Carella and Kling quickly line up a suspect, but another double homicide and a robbery take place. Now the truth behind a double shotgun slaying is turning even messier -- and deadlier -- than before.

I have been reading the 87th Precinct books in 5-book batches for a while now. While they read independently, it's been fun to watch characters change, come, and go. In this one, a plot line from several books ago that had been mostly resolved was revisited, which I really enjoyed. McBain is snarky and entertaining, and always a good read.

At 160 pages these zippy procedurals are best enjoyed in a single sitting.

This was a return to form after the disappointing previous chapter - grisly double homicide and a lot of back and forth looking for leads. Nicely paced, elegantly resolved.
