The Obsidian Tower begins a bold new epic fantasy trilogy in which the broken magic of one woman will either save an entire continent-or completely destroy it. As the granddaughter of a Witch Lord of Vaskandar, Ryx was destined for power and prestige. But a childhood illness left her with broken magic that drains the life from anything she touches, and Vaskandar has no place for a mage with unusable powers. So Ryx has resigned herself to an isolated life as the warden of Gloamingard, her grandmother's castle. At Gloamingard's heart lies a black tower. Sealed by magic, it guards a dangerous secret that has been contained for thousands of years. Until one impetuous decision Ryx makes leaves her with blood on her hands-and unleashes a threat that could doom everything she loves to fall to darkness. Pickpick

Okay, last review and I‘ll be caught up! Finished this one tonight. I absolutely loved this fantasy novel. It‘s rich in the details of the world and the magic. I loved the characters and the magic system. Ryx is a great character to follow and is so strong. She kills everything she touches, she‘s never had a real relationship or friendship. There is a lot of political stuff going on in this book and I loved it. Can‘t wait to pick up the next one!

LiteraryinPA How did you pronounce the character‘s name in your head? Ricks? Reex? Something else? 13mo
Laughterhp @LiteraryinLawrence Oh my, good question! Her full name is Ryxander. (Which in my head I pronounced ryZander). So in my head I said Reex (which is probably wrong). But it‘s easier to continuously read it as a soft S. 13mo
Laughterhp @LiteraryinLawrence I just listened to a sample in the audiobook because I was now curious. The audio pronounces it Ricks… 13mo
LiteraryinPA Who knew? 😋 I think however it sounds in your head is the “right” way to say it. I‘ve had whole books that I‘ve read and then only later when I talk with another reader do I realize I‘ve been hearing it wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo

Yesterday was exhausting. We hosted the in-laws for Thanksgiving. Luckily everything turned out great but it was a lot of peopling.

Then my dog woke me up at 645, so have been trying to relax and read since then.

I‘m 185 pages into this book so far and really loving it. Not sure if I‘ve read a fantasy like this before. So glad this author interviewed Alix E Harrow so I could learn about her! 💚

dabbe Hello sweet pup with the cone on. Hang in there! 🖤🐾🖤 13mo

#TBRPile 📚 Deep within Gloamingard Castle lies a black tower. Sealed by magic, it guards a dangerous secret that has been contained for thousands of years. As Warden, Ryxander knows the warning passed down through generations: nothing must unreal the Door. But one impetuous decision will leave her with blood on her hands--and unleash a threat that could doom the world to fall to darkness.

Turns out this book is my 200th recommendation on BookBub! I loved it — wonderful example of how current epic fantasy can be just as riveting as the classics of the genre (if not more so) without relying on the unexamined misogyny, racism and sexual violence that characterizes too many of the sword-and-sorcery epics of yore.
