Way behind on this one but wow. Set in a near-future where an authoritarian American government restricts women and girls to 100 words per day. Dalcher piles disaster after disaster on her main character and the result is a powerful page-turner. If you liked The Power, grab this (and vice versa.)

So the luncheon I spoke at today featured three authors, and I fangirled quite a lot over #3 on the program. Her brief talk about the beginning and the end of her career at Gourmet was, of course, fascinating.

ValerieAndBooks I‘ve read her earlier memoirs, so should look for this one! 1mo

Quick trip to NYC today to talk at a luncheon about Woman 99! Usually I wear my hair back at book events but this time I indulged in a blowout. Something about New York just encourages indulgence, I guess!

ValerieAndBooks Is that a sign language interpreter on the left? 3mo
theladygreer @valerieandbooks Yep! This interpreter did the first half and then another one switched in for the second. Seems like really hard work with a fast-paced, free-flowing interview like this one! 3mo
ValerieAndBooks Wonderful. Glad to know they provide them — I‘ll look into it for next year (would not have been able to go this year anyway) 😊 3mo

tpixie @theladygreer awesomeness! Have a blast!! 3mo
Aimeesue @ValerieAndBooks They apparently had ASL interpreters at all author stages this year, plus they are available if you ask at the accessibility desk. Many stages also had closed captioning that went up onto a screen at the side of the stage. The volunteers at the doors are *super* great about getting you to the ADA seats. I'm partially deaf and lipread, so this is the ONE day a year it's an advantage. 😋 They HAVE to save ADA seats, so you're not🔽 3mo
Aimeesue …taking a seat from anyone else - they can't seat anyone else there anyway. 3mo
ValerieAndBooks @Aimeesue that is so awesome. Is this always on Labor Day weekend? I can read lips (and speak) in conversation but when there‘s speakers like this, I depend on ASL or captions ! So good to know all this. 3mo
Aimeesue @ValerieAndBooks Yep, it‘s always the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. It used to be on the Mall, but now it‘s held at the Convention Center, which is much better for those with accessibility concerns. The ASL interpreters are fantastic. Kind of interesting to see all the different styles! 3mo
theladygreer @Aimeesue I wondered who the reserved seats up front were for! Great that they do that. And there were captioning screens at every talk I saw. Great that they're making an effort on accessibility. @ValerieAndBooks 3mo
Aimeesue @theladygreer The seats with the blue bands on the backs were ADA seats. The ones with the yellow bands were "Reserved" seats that they keep for the press, friends/family of the speakers and interpreters. They go kinda heavy on the yellow reserved seats - there were open yellow seats at every event, except for SCJ Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Most had open ADA seats as well. I'm not sure how they calculate those numbers. ??‍♀️ (edited) 3mo

I feel like the cover and the title both do this one a disservice, but when I finally picked it up, really enjoyed it. I find myself thinking about the characters at random moments weeks after finishing it, which is always a sign of a good read.

Had a bad run with romances lately -- started and dropped several in a row -- but this one broke the streak. Delightful so far. I'm maybe a third into the audiobook and absolutely adoring it. Great language -- poetic but somehow economical -- and as a lifelong Greek mythology fiend, I'm loving how she weaves all these familiar names (and we haven't even gotten to Odysseus yet) into a single riveting narrative.

This is the second Tessa Dare I've read, after When a Scot Ties the Knot, and it was even more fun & satisfying. She has a way of combining wildly different plot threads -- storybooks! Ferrets! Knights and handmaidens! Scurrilous solicitors! -- and making it all make a wonderful kind of sense by the end.

Listened to this on Overdrive because 1) I needed something new and 2) Julia Whelan narrates & I almost stopped in the middle because parts are so. Freaking. Scary. But glad I pushed through. Genuinely unsettling, but that's Flynn for you. (May be too much sexual content for some but you'll be able to tell that from the very first line.)

Listening to an audiobook (not the one tagged here) and getting constantly distracted by the author's deep unwillingness to use "said" as a dialogue tag. People in this book whisper, titter, gossip, whine, explain, question... even expostulate. Expostulate! It's distracting.
