I Shot the Devil
I Shot the Devil | Ruth McIver
3 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
They went out to the woods to have fun. And two of them didn't return. A dark, twisty thriller of small town buried secrets for readers of THE DRY, THE GIRLS and THE SECRET HISTORY. Twenty years ago, the devil visited the woods around Newport, Long Island, claiming the lives of two boys. A local youth was charged with murder. Case closed. Now journalist Erin Sloane has been commissioned to dig deeper into the story and is sent notes from someone long forgotten. But can she trust what she unearths? And how can she unravel what happened when she has her own secrets to hide? Rich with the sense of a community imploding, buried secrets, corruption and racism, I SHOT THE DEVIL is a stunning portrayal of teenage hysteria and sexuality.

Mehso-so

I had high hopes for this book but it never really grabbed my attention. It may have been my fault (I have a lot going on in my life) but I just couldn‘t find empathy for the characters. I found the pace a bit slow and the story just didn‘t make me want to keep reading.

Pickpick

I saw this reviewed in a weekend paper and it popped up where I buy books. It certainly is a page turner. The “ voice “ reminded me of the really early detective stories. Dragnet came to mind. Author went to a local uni. Did her PHD in true crime inspired fiction. I‘m guessing this book may have been part of that. I had to have my wits about me with all the twists and turns.

I enjoyed the book the whole way through, I found it to be a real page turner and I do recommend it to people who are after a dark, fast read.
