“I was born a slave, but I never let that define me.“
I love this quote because it captures Lynch's resilient spirit and determination to rise above the constraints imposed on him by society. It highlights the idea that one's circumstances do not have to dictate one's identity or future. Instead, Lynch's words inspire readers to recognize their own potential to overcome adversity and to strive for greatness, regardless of their background.

A memorable moment in The Amazing Age of John Roy Lynch occurs when John, a young boy born into slavery, realizes the power of his own voice and the importance of political action. After gaining his freedom, he passionately advocates for civil rights and serves as a legislator during the Reconstruction era, fighting for the rights of African Americans.

Another awesome #nonfiction #picturebook focused on the life of an African American during & after slavery. This book showed a more in-depth look at what life in Antebellum South was like for former slaves. Likewise, the addition of a timeline and two maps at the end of the book allows readers to better understand the historical context of the story. I think this is another great book to use when introducing children to this historical period.
