With beautiful prose and multiple points of view Nicholson tells a story of Thomas Hardy at 84, his 2nd wife, and the young amateur actress who is his Tess. This is not exactly a love letter to Hardy. He doesn‘t come off as a great man so much as a greatly flawed man. But neither is it mean-spirited gossip. It‘s about art v. life, and how we grow old without feeling old. And how very very differently 3 people experience the same moments.
