Closer to Nowhere | Ellen Hopkins

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins's poignant middle grade novel in verse about coming to terms with indelible truths of family and belonging. For the most part, Hannah's life is just how she wants it. She has two supportive parents, she's popular at school, and she's been killing it at gymnastics. But when her cousin Cal moves in with her family, everything changes. Cal tells half-truths and tall tales, pranks Hannah constantly, and seems to be the reason her parents are fighting more and more. Nothing is how it used to be. She knows that Cal went through a lot after his mom died and she is trying to be patient, but most days Hannah just wishes Cal never moved in. For his part, Cal is trying his hardest to fit in, but not everyone is as appreciative of his unique sense of humor and storytelling gifts as he is. Humor and stories might be his defense mechanism, but if Cal doesn't let his walls down soon, he might push away the very people who are trying their best to love him. Told in verse from the alternating perspectives of Hannah and Cal, this is a story of two cousins who are more alike than they realize and the family they both want to save.

Tough story in verse (love Ellen Hopkins for this) about a young boy w/PTSD - his mother died and his abusive addicted father is in jail. He is living with his aunt, uncle, and cousin (nearly same age) and trying like hell to feel safe, loved, and not be a problem.

This is an excellent novel in verse told from the perspectives of two cousins. Hannah‘s family has taken Cal in after his mom‘s death while his dad is in prison, and he is struggling with some really difficult things. Hannah is also a realistic character who grows through the story from someone with almost no empathy for Cal at the beginning to someone who comes to understand him and see his strengths.

Excellent look at two cousins and their chaotic home life. Both characters were sympathetic and interesting. A look at the emotional rollercoaster of PTSD. Just wonderful. It doesn‘t sugar coat the home situation but neither does it feel emotionally manipulative.

Love this novel in verse about a middle schooler learning to heal after growing up with an abusive father. 💔Deals with a lot of difficult issues in an age-appropriate way...heartbreaking but hopeful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

a beautiful middle grade novel in verse. Ellen Hopkins is extraordinary when it comes to writing engaging texts to not only educate others about substance abuse and mental health issues. But also makes readers feel that they are not alone when it comes to living with addiction or mental illnesses.
