I finished this fun middle grade time travel novel with supper tonight. In this story, people with the ability to time travel are called Glitchers. Some, called Butterflies, do so with the intent to change history, & others train with secret government agencies to catch & stop them. Regan & Elliott have been lifelong enemies while in training but then discover they must work together in order to protect the only home they‘ve ever known.

I don‘t actually remember the Challenger explosion, but it was still a bit strange to listen to a story about a historical event within my lifetime. This is a story of 3 siblings with little in common except class with a teacher who is spending the weeks leading up to the Challenger launch with related lessons. I liked each sibling‘s story and how they came together in the end, but somehow I wanted more.

megnews We‘re reading this in March for #MGBuddyRead. I was 10 and watching in class when this happened so not totally sure how it‘ll feel reading about it. I still get emotional watching the documentary. 2y
ncsufoxes I was 9 when the Challenger explosion happened. I remember for weeks leading up to it talking/learning about it. We did activities in the Weekly Readers. We were supposed to watch it but our teachers had difficulties getting it set up that morning. My mom was always grateful that I didn‘t actually watch it live. 2y

Daisey @megnews I voted for this for #MGBuddyRead because I knew it was on my list for this spring. I read it for a Missouri School Librarians‘ award nominations list. I‘m sure it will be an emotional read for you. I was a bit on edge the whole time waiting to see how it would affect the one character. 2y
Daisey @TheAromaofBooks I have a few MG squares on my #BookSpinBingo, but I‘m using this one for 15 so it counts as my January #DoubleSpin. 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Also, have you ever read The View From Saturday? It's also about a group of students who don't seem to have a lot in common, but then they do haha It's one of my favorites. 2y
Daisey @TheAromaofBooks I‘ve seen that book and been interested because I enjoyed From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by the same author, but I‘ve never actually gotten around to reading it. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I grew up on The Mixed-Up Files and love it sooo much. It's what inspired me to check out more of her books. Mixed results, as there were a few that I didn't really care for at all, but something about The View From Saturday struck the same chord for me as The Files. 2y
sblbooks I was 10 as well, we had planned to watch it at school live. However, classes were canceled due to snow that day for us. 2y

I finished my December reading with the tagged audiobook, and it was a great nonfiction choice. With it, I managed to include at least one nonfiction every month this year. I had an overall great reading month with 20 completed books, making it my best #BookSpinBingo this year. That includes 5 #1001books, several MG/YA choices for the #TRS2021 list, and a few Christmas audiobooks as well.

It‘s hard for me to review this clearly and explain my low rating without a major spoiler, so if you want the specifics see the comments.

The story starts with a major power outage in the desert that introduces a 96 mile trek for survival by 2 brothers. However, that power outage is a never explained plot device, and another major point that was fully revealed over halfway through completely hit me the wrong way.

Daisey From the beginning, the younger brother Stew comes across as an irresponsible jerk until it‘s revealed he‘s a diabetic struggling without insulin. The theft of his insulin and their food is what prompted their trek. I have several diabetics in my family, and I have seen their struggles. I don‘t like diabetes being used in this way as a plot point without explanation from the beginning. (edited) 2y

I‘ve got the house to myself, so I‘m enjoying a cup of coffee by the tree and a few more pages of this book.

I listened to this on audio, but once I realized most of the chapters were written in verse I also had to download an ebook version to see the poetic form. It is an important aspect of the storytelling. Nora is already struggling to deal with one traumatic event when she faces another life changing event.

EvieBee Sounds wonderful! 2y
jewright It was available on Libby, so I‘m reading it. I‘m always hoping books about autistic kids will give me some insights. 2y
Daisey @EvieBee @jewright I enjoyed this one. The perspective was great, and it showed Frankie dealing with her difficulties without them being the whole point of the story. 2y
Daisey @TheAromaofBooks This is my #DoubleSpin book 14 for December. (edited) 2y

This was a fun, action packed read. It includes a great group of characters. All of them come from different parts of the world with some kind of difficult background and are learning to work together as spies for MI6. In this first book, Brooklyn becomes a part of the group and they participate in an international science competition while also working to protect those involved.

This is an excellent novel in verse told from the perspectives of two cousins. Hannah‘s family has taken Cal in after his mom‘s death while his dad is in prison, and he is struggling with some really difficult things. Hannah is also a realistic character who grows through the story from someone with almost no empathy for Cal at the beginning to someone who comes to understand him and see his strengths.

I appreciated the historical context of this book, and I thought it developed an interesting type of magic. I like the characters and the relationships that developed between them. However, I think everything was wrapped up a bit too quickly and neatly at the end after building real tension.
