This beautiful MG novel was the perfect way to kick off my #AuldLangSpine reading. The story follows one kid who thinks she messed everything up—and fills in the context as the events of one evening unfold. There‘s such wonderful emotional depth here. Add a small community of found family (including dogs, cat, and seagull) a dash of magic, and gorgeous illustrations: this is definitely a pick.

BarbaraJean I finished this the first week in January, but with travel and visiting family, my Litsy posting has been so scattered! Trying to catch up a bit now. 4mo
monalyisha I thought the attention paid to the adult characters was so careful and tender (without straying away from the fact that MG readers are the intended audience). Written with such a deft hand. 3mo
BarbaraJean @monalyisha Yes! It‘s so impressive how the author balances that attention to young readers without sacrificing the depth of the adult characters and their difficult, complicated backstories. 3mo

After spending time with my #ALSpine list and my library‘s catalog, I‘ve picked the above books for my January TBR. I‘ll be out of town for 2 weeks starting the 6th, so I‘ve been looking at digital version availability! My plan is to start the year with Keeper (a library print copy is in transit to me), then switch to digital for the others as they become available. But there are several others I‘ll build into my reading for the rest of the year!

JamieArc I Hope you like Saltus! It was on my #ALSpine list that I gave to @monalyisha and was happy she passed it along on her list this year! 4mo
monalyisha @JamieArc @BarbaraJean Saltus was my favorite fiction book this year! Hands down. An excellent choice. ✨ 4mo
monalyisha @BarbaraJean I‘m happy so much nonfiction made it onto your shortlist! I truly loved each one of these so much. Excited to find out what you think of them! 4mo
BarbaraJean @JamieArc I love how so many Auld Lang Spine recs go from list to list each year!! @monalyisha All of the nonfiction sounded so good!! And these were more quickly available from the library, as well (digitally, anyway). The Deep (the audiobook!), True Biz, and The Sentence are also on my holds list, but it doesn't look like I'll get to the front of the line for those until February. 4mo

Read for my Young at Heart Book Club. It was my 2nd time reading, a decade later, and I loved it even more than I did the first time around (which was quite a lot to begin with!).

Gorgeous, tender writing; vivid small town/island setting; with found family, two lovable dogs, LGBTQ+ characters, & a dash of mer-mythology.

A perfect MG novel. Also great for gentle-hearted grown-ups who are doing their best, despite life‘s hardships, to stay soft.
