HardcoverHearts In 1999, I went to Robbin Island. This guy has a little shop & was selling this. I was shocked his boastfulness in being his guard & how "close" he was to him. It was so disturbing how he was willing to exploit his role & Mandela's legacy to sell a book. His desire for the shared limelight was gross 8y
shawnmooney @HardcoverHearts I'm aware of this criticism of the author and his memoir, but from anything I've seen in my reading, Mandela spoke and wrote warmly of him, but not at length, and I loved the portrait he created of Mandela, which I thought was rich and respectful. 8y
HardcoverHearts Clearly, Mandela had a profound impact on this man's life and I am glad he was able to articulate that in the book. My apologies for venting. I didn't mean to disparage the work. I was clearly triggered when I saw that based on my extremely upsetting experience with him. Thanks for the response. ✌🏻 8y
shawnmooney @HardcoverHearts Absolutely no need to apologize! It sounds like you had a very offputting experience with him, indeed! If I ever re-read the book, I will perhaps do so with a more jaundiced eye... 8y
