Nine Lives. Four Generations. One Family. The MacEntees are no ordinary family. Determined to be different from other people, they have carved out a place for themselves in Irish life by the sheer force of their personalities. There's Deirdre, the aged matriarch and former star of the stage. Her estranged writer husband Manus now lives with a younger man. Their daughter Alma is an unapologetically ambitious television presenter, while Acushla plays the part of the perfect political wife. And there's Macdara, the fragile and gentle soul of the family. Together, the MacEntees present a glamorous face to the world. But when a series of misfortunes befall them over the course of one long, hot summer, even the MacEntees will struggle to make sense of who they are. From Kathleen MacMahon, the #1 bestselling author of This is How it Ends, comes this powerful and poignant novel, capturing a moment in the life of one family.

Went outside to check on the birds. Luckily, they are smart enough to stay in the mister shaded area. It‘s hot… honestly it normally gets to the 120s by now, but the humidity without rain is intense. All my birds are accounted for from a windstorm causing a lot of people property damage. 🥵

TheLudicReader That heat, though. 😳 9mo
dabbe Glad they're all okay. Hang in there! Roasting in Phoenix, too. Currently 114. 🔥 9mo

Really loved it! What a great story where you hear from every member of the family in turn. Everyone is broken, hurt, lost in some way and finding a new outlook on life and seeking redemption. Takes place over one long, hot summer in Ireland. Highly recommend.

brendanmleonard Thanks for the recc! 8y

I took some time yesterday to clean out the Kobo of books read and expired (deleted those) and reviewed all the books to be read that are sitting on it (haven't opened in a few months 😧). Then settled into reading The Long Hot Summer. Good so far! And I realized again how wonderful the built in reading light is!

Scarlett O'Hara and Hilary Clinton are Alma MacEntee's heroines. ? Thought it funny and so "today".

Saw that someone nabbed this from the library. Remembered it's sitting on my Kobo. 😳 I haven't been using my (normally beloved) Kobo often but I will now to make sure I read The Long Hot Summer!
